Alphason Tonearm ...
I've just had a Linn Sondek LP12 cross my bench for checking over. It is a
'lucky find' for its current owner, and he is going to be moving it on
shortly (as you would ! )
It's fitted with an Alphason Delta tonearm and a Blue Point (No 2 ?)
cartridge, which doesn't have a replaceable stylus. I say "No 2 ?" because
it 'looks' like one of those, but doesn't actually say that on it. Most
images on the 'net do show it with that legend on the front, but I found one
being advertised in America that looks exactly like the one fitted to the
deck I'm looking at, It says nothing on the front other than "BLUE POINT".
Neither me nor the owner are familiar with either the tonearm or the
cartridge. Obviously, he would like to know just what it is that he's got,
so that he can ask the right money for it.
So, anyone familiar with either of these items, and like to venture any
thoughts on quality / performance / second hand desirability - value ?
TIA

**The Alphason is a reasonable arm. Arguably better than the cheap Linn
arms (Basic et al), but not as good as the higher end Linn arms (Ittok
et al). The Sumiko Blue Point No 2 is a reasonable, high output MC cart.
Stylus profile is a standard elliptical type and the cantilever is an
aluminium alloy. Personally, I don't care much for high output MC carts,
but some people like them. I'd rather have a Shure M97XE. Cheaper and
more capable.
Is the Linn an electronically speed controlled variant? They are better
and worth more than older variants.

Thanks for the info, Trevor.
Doesn't appear to be. Seems to be single speed start/stop switch only.

**Big red switch? That's a very old Linn. Still, should be able to sell
it easily enough.
