This is to let people know that I have now extended and made public a new
version of the 'machine searchable' index of the content of "Hi Fi News"
magazine that I am collating.

The new version can be obtained from

http://jcgl.orpheusweb.co.uk/temp/HFNindex15.zip

The content is a flat plain CSV file that should load OK into most
spreadsheet or database programs. This version now covers all issues up to
the end of volume 15. (It now covers some issues that were previously
'missing' from volume 1.)

Anyone who wishes is welcome to use or redistribute the content of the
above zip. I will continue to extend the index to cover more recent issues
and make the results available as and when I can.

How I wish that were possible! FWIW more than once I've suggested they
produce PDFs and either sell them or make them accessible on line to
subscribers. But never got a positive response.

Very frustating given the sheer amount of info in the old copies.

I feel the same about the long-gone magazines. Sadly, in many cases I only
have a few copies of these and now have no idea what is in other isues.

I'd love to change copyright law so that material that has remained
unpublished for, say, 20+ years can be republished by anyone if the IPR
owner fails to do so. But that's not what UK law says... :-/

Well, I suppose scanning them would cost money, which any returns
would be unlikely to recover.

Similar arguments surface from time to time about re-releasing old
vinyl audio material, especially in non-mainstream genres such as folk
and music-hall.

That's in interesting idea! I suspect politicians would be lobbied by the
'power of the media companies' to reject such an idea. But it might be
worth trying a petition just to see how many people agree with something
along the lines I suggested.

BTH I have started threads on the HFN index and on people forming a
'history society' for hifi on the 'pink fish' web forum in case anyone is
interested.

I've only just seen this and thought I'd mention a project recently
undertaken to make certain music technology magazine titles available
online. This was done by interested readers themselves with little or no
input from the publishers (although I'm fairly sure that they had
permission from the publishers to put them publically online). Take a look

Sorry about this, James, but I tried it and they chose to block my access
because I have js disabled/limited.

They stated (posting a requirement as if it were a question) "Why would
anyone do that?". Odd attitude, or ignorance? I can't tell. If they don't
know then I suspect they should before building sites that try to dictate
its use.

I'd have asked them in return: "Why do you choose to block access when it
is perfectly possible to write websites that work fine *without* js?

Shame as it might be interesting. But if a site tries to dictate to me that
I *must* use js I start wondering why and am not impressed. Are the simply
clueless and thoughtless?

Sorry about that. It might be interesting, but they seem not interested in
my being able to see it except on their odd terms.
