A7's were the speakers to have at one time for their efficency. They
had no true bottom end (woofer horn was designed for low-mids), no highs
(no tweeters), but they could play very loud. That is what they were
designed to do. A band I was in had clones of them made out of
particle. They sounded good as far as a bar goes, but they were heavy
to move. If you didn't have a bank of Crown DC-300's to work with, the
A7 was a great alternative to get volume.

The other nice thing about the A7 and the other VoTT systems is that they
had low end directivity as the result of the bass horn design. This not only
buys you efficiency (since your bass is going to the audience and not being
wasted elsewhere), it also buys you lower bass leakage (a big deal in
multi-auditorium installations).

Klipsh Lascala's were up there for sound also, and they used EV T35
tweeters back mouted which limited the dispersion for the tweeters.

To the originator of this post, all they were wanting was a way to
protect the investment. Saying an A7 won't do what he is wanting is not
the truth. They will play loud music for a bunch of tipsy listeners who
couldn't tell freq response if they had too.

The A-7 can actually be hacked to have decent response. They need to be
biamped, they need to have the Radian aftermarket diaphragms and have the
horn resonances damped down with sand and tar. They need some additional
cabinet reinforcing to get rid of the big cabinet flexing modes in the
600 Hz region. They will never, never go very low. But they aren't bad
sounding if they are properly set up, and they remain an excellent choice
for cinema installations.

They will be heavy to move and care must be given them so as to not be
dropped, but they will get the gig done.

They were never really intended for mobile use, although there were lots of
folks who added handles, additional reinforcing, and wheels. Hell, I knew
a group that toured with A-5s. I wouldn't do it, but I've seen people do
all kinds of crazy things.

The addition of subs and tweeters would help their overall sound though.

The sub is absolutely essential if you want any real low end extension, but
the top end on the horn can be improved a lot. It'll never be flat up to 20KC,
but you can get them much better than stock. Fixing the horn is a much
better solution than adding a tweeter. If you get a chance to listen to
the system at the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, VA, they have a set of the Altec
X-1 speakers with supertweeters added, and the integration of the supertweeter
is really just not right.

Thanks for the update! Hmm..........how would you read this.
1. Am I top posting now?
2. Replying to you?
3. Speaking in general?

My point exactly!!!! It was sarcasm really

lots of stuff, including at least a couple of "points" snipped

Er, just exactly WHAT was your point? Since you top-posted without
trimming
anything, and didn't post in context to the "point", how are we to know
exactly what you agreed to, there? Frankly, I didn't read through all the
stuff you didn't trim to try and determine exactly what point you were
referring to, because it would have been too much trouble. Additionally,
I
should point out that the question is rhetorical, as I don't really care
WHAT the point was. I just thought that you might like to make a note of
how confusing this style of posting can become so that (should you choose
to) next time you can be more courteous to your reader and trim the
non-relevant bits and post in context so they will know just exactly what
you are referring to. Or not.

As you have read the latter posts I think you get the message.........
Sometimes you can buy something that REALLY lasts forever and is forever
unbeatable.
I have slightly modified mine with sand and tar and variable adjustable
crossovers, rear pocket (bose style), I push 600 watts pure per speaker
Crown amp
and you can't sit within 25 ft from them at a 1/4 turn. I use them just for
showing off nothing more. If you know and are a connisure of speakers you
would know there was nothing better from late 70's to mid 80's and in alot
of metal clubs that's all they bands will use.
Go to any east coast or west coast bands website where they are a tribute
band or a regular yearly booked band and look at the set, it's quite obvious
what they are using. I've seen StereoMud, Drowning Pool, Soul Coughing,
Skrape, Soil , The Cult all using A7's
I just saw Steppenwolf guess what they were using...... yep A7's last year
in Fairfax Virginia oh and the infamous B3........

Lets look on line for the highest to lowest priced speakers we want to

Did you know A7's or VOT are almost not blowable!
I've had mine since band days and won't give them up for that reason
alone.....Lets see.......hmm where are they used?
Maybe a Huge Rock Concert stacked 6 high? Go to many shows lately? I
have,
they're still the most used speaker availabe period.
I have not gone to a show and NOT seen one anywhere in D.C. MD. or VA.
Now are were leaning toward a Mackie type?

go over to www.prosoundnews.com
they have detailed specs on who is using what and where
I will send you 100.00$ for every mention of a7 or vot speakers used in
thier top 10 concert listings
if you send me 1$ for every listing where a7 or VOT is NOT mentioned
in fact find any shed9minimum 6,000 seats including lawns) or arena or
stadium show(world wide, just one) that is using a7 or VOT as foh
speakers period and I will buy you dinner
