Only hens 'lay' on tables. Perhaps you found it lying on the table?
Why is it that all these estuary-English speakers don't know the
difference between the two verbs?

(Pedant mode off)

But then again, hens don't lay tables - but people do.

Perhaps he found it (while) laying (his secretary) on the office table.

I would imagine that the Kiwis are more akin to the Welsh, he said

**Perhaps. I am not aware of the status of the Welsh in Pommy society.

Rural yokels and sheep-shaggers. Sound familiar? :-)

**Sure does. I last visited NZ in 1979 (I recall the disbelief at the
announcement of Elvis' death - we thought it was a sick Kiwi joke) for a
skiing holiday. The slow drivers, the incredibly narrow roads, the single
lane bridges (on major highways), the 'black ice' all contributed to the
charm. It felt like we had just stepped back 30 years.

Can't find nationality breakdowns there. However, I did find this -

Back in 2000, "about 5 per cent of the more than 400,000 New Zealanders
living permanently in Australia claim an unemployment benefit."
(Unemployment rate in Australia at the time about 6.7%.)

"Despite the dole-bludger stereotype, New Zealanders had higher

You may be right; I don't know. That last sentence was a total guess on
my part, based on the fact that it was no longer possible to emigrate to
Bondi Beach or Kings Cross via the dole office, as the stereotype went.
OTOH, Maoris are over-represented in NZ prison populations here ...

Plenty would agree. He certainly polarised the nation at the time.

invaded, a Google search on "Piggy Muldoon" may be illuminating)

On second thought ...

When they were just Heuer, they were good watches, now they're just

Interesting. I always thought they were "Tag Heuer". Oh well, not that those
Oriental yuppies will know anyway.
