And
Q) Whats the difference between a monitor engineer and a toilet seat?

A) A toilet seat only has to put up with one arsehole ata time.

And on that note...........

Rigger I understand. But monitor engineer? Never heard that one in my
(considerable) years in UK broadcasting.

Someone who does mixes for the artistes' foldback monitors.

I have no idea what the term "stage mix" means; was brought up on live sound
rather than television sound.

The monitor engineer is the person who has to mix down what the on-stage
artists hear. The front of house engineer is the person who mixes down what
the audience here.

But I suspect I am now teaching my grandmother to suck eggs!

In TV, it might be the guy who fixes the studio TV monitors - ie screens.
Although if you'd said monitor mix I'd have understood.

The front of house engineer is the person who mixes down
what the audience here.

Probably PA mix for TV.

But I suspect I am now teaching my grandmother to suck eggs!

Heh heh - it's amazing how terms vary.

A rigger in 'live' TV will not only install the long cable runs and heavy
equipment, but drive the trucks, and may also act as a grip when required.
As well as making the bacon sarnies. If you're lucky.

I've always wondered: what on earth is a grip? And, for that matter, a
"dolly boy"?

"Bacon sandwich" is a universal term, I think.

A grip assists in moving the camera on and off shot, and is in charge of
the various camera mountings that may be required.

IMHO you mean 'dolly grip' - that refers to when the camera is mounted on
a dolly - a platform on wheels which would usually run on track or rails.

'Best boy' is the charge hand electrician.

Think these definitions are near enough for jazz - they're film terms and
not really used in TV.

However, the above Q and A could be applied to *any* engineer -
particularly those who post in audio fora.................
