Default Arcam's old CD72 (playing DIY CD)

Folks,

Does anyone know if the CD72 will play re-writeable audio CD's? (CDRW)

I have a few re-writeable audio CD's which I compile and play before
finally burning the tracks to a normal audio CD (write once, CDR). The
re-writeable CD's play perfectly on my cheapo Sony 270 but will they on
a CD72?

If the CD72 will play re-writeable CD's reliably I would be interested
in getting one since it could save me about 200 pounds compared to
buying the CD73.

Last time I ordered from SVP, 100 CDR's cost a tenner + post. Cheaper to
bin your 'failure' compilations?

Yes, mine does.

I don't have an Arcam player. However in my experience with other audio
players, the results also depend on:

1) The 'brand' of CDRW or CDR

2) The device used to write to the CDR/W

Thus I suspect the answer may depend on the above...

Unless the CD72 was specifically designed to play CDRW's it may also vary
from one CD72 to another.

Jim

I've had some mixed experiences with CD-RWs...

Technics SL-PG320A - would play RWs if you put the disc in and let it
play through. Trying to skip tracks would cause playback to fail.

Technics SL-PG580, 590, 390 - would not play RW (sat for 30 seconds
scanning then reported "no disc").

Toshiba SD-3107 - played RWs fine, never tested with DVD-R/RWs as player
died before I got a DVD writer.

Toshiba SD-2109 - played CD-RWs, DVD-Rs with some persuasion, but not
DVD-RWs.

Toshiba SD-420 - played CD-RWs fine, DVD-Rs fine, DVD-RWs with persuasion.

Toshiba SD-530 - played CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW.

Arcam DV-79 - plays CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW no problems.

(Note, DVD-R also includes DVD+R.)

The only time I've had problems playing CD-Rs was on the Technics
SL-PG580 (replaced by 590 under warranty) that had been burned using an
HP 2x external parallel port writer with HP's own software. Later
attempts using an internal SCSI drive and CDBurn on an Acorn RISC PC
(that's going back some!) then using an ATAPI writer and Adaptec Easy CD
Creator worked perfectly, as have every recent burn using ATAPI drives
and Nero or XCDRoast/cdrecord. So I'm assuming that either the HP drive
or software was writing the disc outside the Red Book spec.

To add to the list Glenn gave:

My Meridian 200 will happliy play TDK *Audio* CDRs, but struggles with TDK
*Computer* CDRs. i.e. it will play them, but may fail to start with a 'toc'
error (failure to read TOC) a few times first. It won't normally play
Maxell CDRs, but it will (usually) play TDK Audio CDRWs.

My Quad 67 will play TDK and Maxell CDRs but won't play TDK CDRWs which
are OK on the Meridian.

My Philips DVDR70 struggles to play TDK CDRs, but won't play CDRWs.

Not surprisingly, my Pioneer CDRW audio recorder plays all the above with
no problems.

FWIW all the discs in question have been written either with the Pioneer or
with my Iyonix (Sony CDRW drive).

I've concluded that unless a device is specifically designed for CDR/Ws you
can't be confident in advance which brands/types it may or may not play. So
have to try on a case-by-case basis...

Jim

Forgot to add... the CD changer I used to have in the car (Sony CDX-757)
before I upgraded to a MEX-1HD would play CD-RWs fine. For in-car use
though I used to load a 700MB CD-RW up with MP3s and stack 10 MP3 CDs
into the changer. Result, about 120 albums stored (at a decent bitrate).

The drawback? You couldn't skip a "folder" at a time on the changer, so
to get to say the 4th album on the CD you had to skip track by track.
Pain in the backside...

I forgot to mention that problems are fewer in my case with audio CD-Rs.

I have a battered old Technics player that will pay a frisbee:-)

I have two prof Denon studio CD players, which are extremely
picky. They will play any commercially produced CD, but are
sometimes not so happy with CD-R.

I have found that they both accept TDK CDR-R, and perform
better with recordings made on a dedicated audio CD recorder
(HHB CDR 830) than those burnt on a PC.
