Default Ebay Query - Serial No.s Of Equipment ?

Hi,

as always with e-bay look at the persons feedback rating, click on it and see what other
buyers have said about them. If they have numerous negatives then obviously you should
avoid. If they have no negatives in the last 6 months and lots of possitive comments for
you to read then you can trust them. I always read the feedback before I think of bidding
on an item.

I contacted an Ebay seller to request the serial no. of an item of
equipment, and they said they were unwilling to reveal the no. due to the
possibility of people trying to disguise stolen equipment - does this seem
like a legitimate concern, or should I read this as a warning signal, and
avoid placing a bid.

TIA.

I have contacted numerous sellers and never had anyone refuse to give the
serial numbers before, so I have decided to 'walk away'.

Thanks for all the replies.

I would not give out a serial number. for all i know you may have a similar
(stolen) item that you want a legitimate serial number for. find another
question to ask, the seller could just give a dummy number anyway.

The serial number can be used to check model variants and modifications.
Checking this is perfectly reasonable. If the serial number supplied by
the seller is inconsistent with the pictures and/or description then
walk away.

Do you really think somebody would try to forge a serial plate? What
else are they going to do with it?

Someone with half a brain cell could try to suggest that it was their
equipment and that it had been stolen.

Of course, to be credible they would have to inform the police and
insurance company, but it should be easy for the genuine owner (without
a receipt) to give evidence (provided they keep copies of emails) that
the claimant was given the number before he contacted the police etc.
