Asitappens, I know they are now - the Pinkies have browned in summat lovely
(I mean *way better* than commercial boxes) and the 'crunchiness' has gone
from the Jerichos. The slight 'boxiness' on *some* R3 announcements is, I am
sure, coming from the studio and not the speakers and the music is perfectly
fine.

Noticed the rumble?..

The tuner was eager to please? Good customer relations? Hardly, this guy is
*busy* - one word out of place and he'd walk!! (Nice bloke but a bit
*prissy* if you know what I mean!! ;-)

Can't get that piccy of his "tuner", Pipex gone tits up again?...

('One here' knows he won't/doesn't have to travel too far for work!! ;-)

*I can die happy now!! ;-)

It's revising my view about cheap secondhand stuff from eBay, given the
arseache that can be added to that equation sometimes!!

I've still got the Sony ESS557 is it?, hewn out of a lump of solid
copper!. Excellent door mechanics sooo smooth and the sound ain't bad
either!...

My old chum Pat (the one with the Trio tuner you) has a beautiful and *huge*
top-loading Sony:

It takes forever to load which is a pain until you realise it has slowed
down the process, made it a bit 'LP like' and taken all the dash and hurry
out of the equation!! (Much better way to play and enjoy music - you really
need a hard disk and MP3s if you want *zippy*....!! :-)

Here also is the above-mentioned tuner - found this pic while I was looking
for the pic of the Sony!

(Lovely stuff Pat has got, but it's all a bit *bling*!! :-)

Here's some mo

I believe I have - and a low, roaring noise from time to time.

Tbh, I've had Clarsick FM on as much lately - even a splash of R4 at times!!

Yep!!

Seems OK atm, though.......

I've got one of those. It's the SCD-777ES, the "little brother" of the
original Sony SCD-1 SACD player. I wouldn't leave the puck there though.

I do, it's on my Show N Tell page - here it is:

Now Tony, you're perhaps the one to ask - having seen what Swim's Toppy can
do, I grabbed a couple of Tommies (Thomson Twins? :-) real cheep from Argos
(again.....) this morning. (One is for someone else.....)

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/thompsontwins.JPG

Do you know anything seriously detrimental about them or are they OK? - They
are less than half the cost of a Toppy and *seem* to have all the bells and
whistles (on the latest firmware) for decent 'watch and blow'...???

(I watch hardly any telly apart from the news, but what there is that's
worth watching is *never* on when I'm in a position/mood to watch it!!)

I haven't any direct experience of the new breed if all in the one box
digital TV recorders, what we have here is an AV server system!.

The only one as such was a Manhattan satellite receiver which had a hard
drive therein and that was OK but the disc Maxtor spit!, whined like
no ones business!....

Likewise, but the wife loves her Froggie sat TV!......

Have you got the full spec?

I recently got a Toppy and am generally pleased with it.

Three things annoy (so far) :-

It is slow to fire up from standby.
The EPG can take a long time to load fully
If the TV is in standby - and you're out so doing an 'unattended'
recording, it switches the TV on when it drops into record.

Brilliant bits:-
Simple recording off EPG - if only this was more accurate. ;-(
Easy to use for the basics - ie treating it like a VCR
Can record two things at once and watch a third live all off Freeview.
The ability to pause a 'live' prog when - say - the phone goes and pick it
up from there afterwards.
Pretty well as far as my viewing unlimited storage - I've got the 250 gig
version.

One FreeView moan. Some radio services peak to 0dBFS. TV sound only to
-10dBFS. Many older progs on the 'minority' channels to considerably less
than -10. So switching from TV sound to radio can result in a *vast*
change in level.

I'm sure that's what he said (earlier visit about 6 months ago) - I suspect
he's had it since Pontius was a pilot though....

Yes, I gather they can but thankfully I didn't notice any disk/fan noise in
the brief few moments I've had farting about with the Tommy so far!
