req adv: soundcard with dedicated headphone support
I'm looking for a soundcard that comes with it's own dedicated headphone connection point, either internal or external, it doesn't
matter.
Note: I know I can plug headphones into a cards sound output but that's not what I want. What I need is a soundcard that will
provide headphone audio independent of any windows settings or speaker output.
Thanks for any pointers.

You could use USB headphones, or fit a second soundcard. However,
nothing will give you audio independent of *any* windows settings,
because it's the operating system that routes sound from device to device.

That sounds about right - the Audigy series of Creative cards can
(could?) be bought with a front panel that has a headphone jack and
volume knob. That socket *might* receive a full line signal independent
of settings. I can check if you'd like.

Most soundcards are software controlled for things like gain settings etc
so I'm not sure how this would work.
I use an external mixer to provide monitoring etc on the input to the card
which I can also switch to the output. It's much quicker than messing
about with software for simple level changes etc - I just leave the
soundcard on a 'normal' setting for line in.

Second sound card is the way to go. I use two in mine (Skype + multimedia)

yeah please check - that'd be good if the headphone signal was independent of settings

Well, the headphone level can be adjusted (via the volume pot on the
front panel) without affecting windows settings, but any change to the
windows software changes the volume - it's an Audigy Platinum.
And I can't see how any will be different - unless fixed gain.

Agreed.
The way this stuff works, generally starts out in the application program.
