Is this too much noise for a budget turntable..

vinyl source for good measure.

I noticed something a bit odd, the hum
only appears when the needle finds the groove. When its skirting around
outside of the groove there is no noise.


It's possible to get induced hum on the cartridge from the turntable motor
which doesn't show with the pickup on the rest.

Aren't you seeing the lf stuff?

Only listened to it on the computer speakers. The mains hum is the obvious
thing.

Ah. Look at it in a wave editor. There's HUGE amounts of lf rubbish.

Wooden floors are not good. When archiving
your LPs, a high-pass filter at 20Hz will be useful if you can't get rid of
the 6.5Hz resonance.

The Maplin pre-amp is not very good. I haven't done a proper comparison with
my decent pre-amp so it may be psychological, but it sounds 'grainy' to me.

drops. Might your computer or preamp be adding this?

(*) Captured to my PC via a cheap pre-amp from Maplin, saved me having to
lug my PC into the sitting room!
Currently reduced from £25 to £15 if anyone is interested!

Cheaper than the RicherSounds Vivanco pre-amp.

**OK, first mistake: The Debut is already fitted with a phono preamp. It can
only be used with a line level input. I apologise if I have misunderstood
what you are trying to do, but you should be connecting your Debut directly
to an AUX, or line input. If you are still having problems, then look for
external interference sources, make sure you are using a 16 Volt AC power
supply (very important!) and that cartridge wiring is correct.

Do they have speed controls too?

Anyhow it looks like there are different flavours from that web page.

I did a bit of experimenting, I removed the belt,
the noise only occurs when the motor is on and the needle is either
in the groove, or outside the groove and not moving tangentially/skating.

I then took a record I didnt care much for, put the stylus on it, and
lifted the record clear of the turntable. I still had the noise,
so I guess as you say its electrical problem and not mechanical.

Over in avforums some other people have mentioned this hum, but no
indepth feedback yet!
