Yeah, I think you've made enough of a prat of yourself for one day.
Maybe we'll open the playpen again tomorrow.

Ok, to avoid future confusion, am I INDEED one, or is the "one" to a up
to now unspecified degree of accuracy, so maybe its best if I assume I
am somewhere between half and almost two bloody pathetic, ASD ****ed
pommy ******s?
Precision is important after all.

Hi Lordy,
Just do a Google Groups search on the name in aus.hi-fi,
aus.electronics, etc and you will get the idea very quickly
what this fruitcake is all about. Please ignore him and do
not even respond to the abuse.

Just breaking in my Project Debut 3 turntable. Nice sound
but there is
a lot of turntable noise. Its been a while since I've
used a turntable in anger but I don't remember this much
noise on my old Dual 505.
I've uploaded a small mp3 clip (about 10secs) here
http://lordy.org.uk/rising_to_the_top_-_keni_burke.mp3 (*)
An ideal sample for this purpose would include segments with no music at
all, and music that was as loud as possible.
The background noise is only present when the stylus hits
the vinyl - so I guess its not a ground issue?
Agreed.
Does it sound excessive?
Not if the record is very dirty.

Thanks.
. I've re-recorded the clip and I've noticed something
more interesting about that noise. It only kicks in when
the groove is found...
http://lordy.org.uk/noise.html
Preamp noise looks to about 66 dB down, which is mediocre.
Noise of a groove with no music is only about 30 dB down, which is pretty
horrid.
The two channels of the cartridge may be mismatched at high frequencies.

Strange - it's mainly hum which would suggest a ground
problem, although it would be nice if the clip
included a bit before the stylus was lowered. It's
possible to get induced hum on the cartridge from the
turntable motor which doesn't show with the pickup on
the rest.
Aren't you seeing the lf stuff?
Only listened to it on the computer speakers. The mains
hum is the obvious thing.
The 100 Hz hum is only present when the needle is actually in the groove.
Ah. Look at it in a wave editor. There's HUGE amounts
of lf rubbish.
Cheap turntable?

I noticed something a bit odd, the hum
only appears when the needle finds the groove. When its
skirting around outside of the groove there is no noise.
I'm still seeing loads of stuff below 20Hz, even before
the needle drops. Might your computer or preamp be adding
this?
Tone arm resonance around 10 Hz or so.
