deck that *looks* the part on eBay - trouble is you don't know what they're
like until you get them! The trick is to try and get one where the cart's
worth having anyway!!

Also a good turntable - what sort of price, though? As Keith says,
secondhand is always a bit of a pig in a poke. You have a very good
chance of buying something nice, but that isn't guaranteed. If the
price is not too much, you can write it off to experience if it all
turns nasty.

here - no-one here's going to compete with you and will serve as a 'notice
of intent' (ie 'bagsy' it). This one claims a clean lid (desirable and not
always available) and 'excellent condition' - it would certainly do me from
'eBay appearances' and I would definitely bid on it:

With 5 days to go, I would expect it to fetch at least 60 quid and quite
possibly double that if things heat up. Fully auto might put some people off
(not me - I'm using one myself atm) but it's luxurious/lazy and means there
is less likelihood of damage to record or cart from careless handling. (ie.
Er Indoors could use it!! :-) The cart is not easy to identify from the
picture (could be a Shure M75HE2) so there is no 'safety' in that unless you
ask the Seller to tell you what's written on it. Mostly the carts on these
decks are at least OK and needles easy enough to get.

With these older Technics decks the 'xx10' numbering usually means 'black'
finish and Mk2 usually means that at least some of the controls are outside
the dust cover for easy access and, er, easy dust-gathering. The 1300 is
'Servo' speed controlled (not Quartz) which doesn't actually mean a lot in
terms of performance and it is one of the more 'budget' offerings with an
original RRP of 350 USD - the top decks reached prices like 1400 USD, by
comparison.

One thing - when these auto and semi-auto decks have been moved the
mechanisms get confused and will very likely act od first time or two - just
gently let them work themselves out with maybe a little finger support, 'til
they get their bearings!

One other thing - if you can't satisfy yourself the Seller can pack the
thing properly, go and collect it it! (Ask here if you want the details
explained!)

In a word? If the one you are thinking of is the above auction or very
similar, grab it and forget all about flimsy planks, belts and buzzy little
motors forever!! ;-)

Absolutely, but I've never had a dud yet (and I've bought a few off eBay) -
the thing is to weigh up the auction and, as I said to Lordy, go collect the
deck if the geography's good. A bit of spit and polish can make just about
any of these decks glitter but immaculately clean lids are rare, so
expectations in that area need to be realistic at the price they can be had
for. They are almost all easily lifted off for use, anyway...

Thats my worry. I'd certainly wouldn't buy a belt drive second hand, but
I think the direct drives maintain pitch better over time. All the
(admittedly budget) belt drives I've had in the past have suffered from
pitch variation at some point. How much of that was bad handling by me ?

I know it isn't a guarantee, but I think that a turntable in such nice
cosmetic condition is likely to have been looked after. It is easy
enough to clean off grubby fingerprints for a sale, but this one also
seems to lack the digs and scratches that would hint at a hard life.

Right, well look sharp - email the Seller and ask him if he'll end the
auction with a 'Collect For Cash/Buy It Now' and go and collect it (you got
12 quid for the petrol) - he can only tell you to **** off, but it's a
couple of days in with no bids and he'll be sweating a bit!! I'd try and get
it for a nifty fifty and you never know, he might throw in some other bits
and bobs or have summat else of interest to get rid of..??

If you do collect it, lift the platter off (spindle might need a tap with a
bit of wood to free it off) and don't let the lid chafe on the chassis or it
will polish the corners all shiny - put a bit of cloth under the lid or take
it off completely!

Tell him he's put that SME mount in all wrong. The axis of the slot
should point at the spindle.
