wrote: Its the arrogance that gets to me. The absolute certainty that this could not be heard etc.. It makes me think of the know-alls a few hundred years ago claiming that the earth was the centre of the universe and the sun revolved around us. All knowledgeable people knew that, you could see the evidence with your own eyes and anyway it was against the laws of God to suggest otherwise. Are you talking about the believers in magic cables, or the skeptics? I studied telecommunications for 5 years in the 70s at technical college. I know about LRC did the maths, etc. I know there is no explanation for why any one *suitable* speaker cable should sound different from another. Trouble is, I have 3 different types of speaker cable in my house and I know the characteristic sound of each, they are clear. Now what do I do? If it's THAT clear, take the £1000. Easy money. I haven't the tools to investigate why. I haven't the confidence to set myself up as the fall guy for DBT. Why? You sounded very confident just now? Why would the "characteristic sounds" be less clear? |

I wrote this several days ago and decided not to post it as it was utterly pointless. Pluto (I know Dave and Jim know what that is) saved the file in the drafts box. I examined this today and somehow it got posted. Not intended. Once again I apologise. Don't apologise, Bob. I'd be delighted if anyone could reliably tell the difference between cables as it would inspire research into why. But first that person has to be found, and the tests conducted properly. -- *If a mute swears, does his mother wash his hands with soap? Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

It started out sounding like a point. We'd found (at last) someone confident of telling one cable from another. But then you backed down. Your second statement negated the first. So yes, pointless. Pity. |

I work in pro audio, (so am perhaps more used than most to listening for slight differences in things that may indicate a fault, etc) and can't tell the difference between adequate gauge ordinary cable used for speakers and any of the others - with the exception of the high inductance type. Not that I claim to have 'golden ears'. ;-) So when people claim 'chalk and cheese' between cables I'm naturally suspicious, as I simply can't reproduce their findings. Also I well know how easily the ear is fooled - as it's part of my job. So if someone could prove to me they *can* reliably tell the difference I'd like to understand what that difference is, and why others can't hear it. But a simple 'I *can* tell the difference' without acceptable proof just won't do. After all, anyone can tell the difference between chalk and cheese every time... -- *If you don't pay your exorcist you get repossessed.* Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

Correct on one point. Wrong in that it was *my* question, it wasn't, I merely chimed in regarding the purchase of cables from Farnell/CPC. -- Andy Hewitt http://www.thehewitts.eclipse.co.uk/ http://web.mac.com/andrewhewitt1/ |
