Keith's journey to audio Nirvana is one of the most interesting topics on this group. He is one of the few "hands-on fettlers" - fast become a rare breed. Absolutely not - you don't have to travel far from this group to find hoards of people hacking and chopping bits of wood or setting fire to the carpet with their soldering irons! My piddly little doings are chicken**** compared with them!! Check this out for a start: http://www.diyaudio.com/index.php?s=...c81e0181db5c6e And then there are countless little, specialised forums! I was talking about *this* NG. There are very few fettlers. Iain |

The enclosures are the remains of the home-brews I acquired many years ago. They're based on the KefKit3 - Concerto drivers, crossover and baffle, build yer own boxes. About 14" deep, 2' wide, 3' high. I once calculated the volume to be 135L. They also have a series of slots cut in the back (by the original builder), which I think is probably a bad thing. The main speakers are Kef Q Compacts, so the mid and top drivers in the old boxes are now unused - they're just big reflex bass cabs, probably with added slotty mush. The cabinets are the right size. Don't know how you tune the slots in the rear. Not that it matters if you have a DSP to equalize the bass. -- Kef had an even larger driver than the B139, known as the B1814 which was eighteen by fourteen inches. It was used in the Kef K1 monitor. I have a pair of these, ex BBC. They can bee seen at: http://www.kef.com/history/1960/k1monitor.asp Iain |

Lockwood, of course, started out as cabinet makers and supplied the BBC with all sorts of custom made enclosures not only related to audio. Then ventured into speaker making. For a while they were flavour of the month for pop monitoring. Dunno if they still exist. -- *Some days you're the dog, some days the hydrant. KEF also made at least some of the BBC designed LS 5/1s of that era. My pal in BBC transcription put me on to them. I have never seen another pair. When Raymond Cooke was alive, I mentioned to him once at an AES convention that I had a pair of K1s, and he expressed an interest in having them back on a "new lamps for old" basis. Iain |
