Too damn old for this silliness...
Nick has very kindly loaned me his superb Behringer ECM 8000 measurement mic
for me to do my speaker investigations and a very handy disk with test tones
and various tracks on it - including some 'bangs' which, of course, are only
there to entertain immature types who never got over such silly, schoolboy
stuff....
.....so, here are two versions of the same 3 short tracks (machine gun,
Chieftain tank, thunderclap) recorded open mic:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Bangs%20A.mp3
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Bangs%20B.mp3
:-)
They are different amp/speaker pairings, otherwise all else is the same for
both trax and the recording level shenanigans were as much a bugger as they
have been on my little lapel mic!
Anybody care to pick the 'better one'...??
(Headphones on and wick 'em up for best effect!!... ;-)

Ah, the Alan Parsons sound check CD - the trains are good. Lights out, and
your sitting in a station...

I had expected them to be rather more similar than they were. Speaker
B has unbelievably peaky treble; it really is most unpleasant
sounding. Of course there is a chance that is the way the track is
meant to sound, but somehow I doubt it. Which was which?
Could you post a direct connection recording for a reference?

I think you'll find that verse predates Spike Milligan.

So did I, but I have introduced another variable since the other recent
recordings (??) - in reality, the A speakers are the 'peakier' ones by far!!
(Actually, the player was different also - a Pioneer DVDP this time, but I
doubt it made any difference.)
Speaker
B has unbelievably peaky treble; it really is most unpleasant

Let me keep it 'blind' for the moment and I'll post some more trax (with the
above variable taken out of the equation) later, when I have mastered the
levels at bit better - those recordings were the very first I have done with
Nick's mic. Everything is still on the floor to avoid clipping - just like
always!! And the waveforms are all over the place atm!!
Could you post a direct connection recording for a reference?
OK, in this order:

OK - all sussed. Your system (not the microphone/PC - your record
player) was seriously heavily overloaded and clipped during playback.
It is just way short of power capability for reproducing that
waveform. Try turning it down quite a long way, then we can get to
grips with what it is really doing.

OK, I'll redo Bangs B and repost it - a little later, the 'household' isn't,
er, fully assembled yet so I am stuffed for open mic stuff!!
(If I don't do summat different - I've heard enough of those bangs to last a
lifetime!!)

Excellent stuff, Don - I'm back on this as soon as I can get to it. Right
now I'm up to my neck in spreadsheet stuff for a second house purchase
(joint with Son No. 2)...!!
Shortly....
