Interesting. That's exactly the opposite of my experience. I have a 4.0
system at the moment and have tried numerous centre speakers from Kef and
B/W and in every case I disliked the result and returned the speaker.
The vast majority of so-called dedicated center speakers are poor
designs. Ever wonder why they are horizontal and do not look like the
speakers used for stereo or the main L/R speakers in HT? That is
because they are designed to fit under (over) a TV and appear, by
their shape, as if they have a wide horizontal dispersion. In fact,
they have, in general, worse and more uneven horizontal dispersion
than normal speakers. The laws of physics that impose themselves on
speaker design apply equally well to all positions.
In my experience, I use three identical speakers across the front in
order to get the best and most uniform sound quality.
I find my existing front speakers have such good dispersion that I don't
have a hole in the middle and a centre speaker contributes very little.
It may, indeed, be better than having a real center, depending on your
setup and needs. However, with sources that have a discrete center
signal, particularly SACD and DVD-A music discs, the "phantom" center
is not nearly as good as a (good) real one.
Surround speakers on the other hand add a great deal to both concerts and
movies.
Agreed.
IMHO of course but I suspect this depends on your room and system and
personal preferences.
Agreed.
