My new Sennheiser HD-555's burping...
Hi guys,
I purchased a set of new Sennheiser HD-555 from a local hifi shop.
They sound really good but at high volumes, low frequencies seem to
crack them. At lower volumes all sounds good.
My older $20 TDK's (though though not as detailed) seem to handle
lower frequencies pretty well or atleast gracefully attenuate them.
Is this something common to the HD-555's? Is it a technical fault with
the headphones? Or do I leave them to 'burn in' for a little longer
before reving them at high volumes?
Cheers
Max

How loud are you running these things? And does the noise happen in
both ears or just the one? They should certainly be working straight
out of the box, and your description sounds like you may be turning
them up too far - either for your ears or for the amplifier that is
driving them.

Hi,
The burping has been noticed on both channels actually depends on the
recording really.
Could it be that the headphones are actually revealing something in
the recording that isn't coming through on the others?
Well if it was the case of a dodgy amp on high volumes then how come
the $20 TDK's don't play up?
Do you need to turn the volume control up higher with the HDs? If so
it is possible that the amp is overloading.
I have tried on both my amps and have the same problems.
It is certainly possible you have bought a bad pair.

Hi Don,
Negative about the recording. I am running the amps through awesome
sets of Whatmoughs and JBLs and none of them have revealed any burps.
The amps have been used on high loads earlier and nothing like this
has happened.
If its not a 'burn in' issue it could only be that I have been sold a
lemon.
Cheers

"max graff"
I purchased a set of new Sennheiser HD-555 from a local hifi shop.

** So you are driving them with what ????????????
A CD player ?
My older $20 TDK's (though though not as detailed) seem to handle
lower frequencies pretty well or atleast gracefully attenuate them.
** Are they 120 ohms nominal impedance and of "open ear " design ?????
Bet not.

Hi Phil,
I am tried running my headphones off my Denon and Marantz amp's.
TDK's are close ear design.
Is this burping a normal thing on open designs?

I am tried running my headphones off my Denon and Marantz amp's.
** So the drive is likely fed to the phones via a resistor of about 470
ohms.
TDK's are close ear design.
** Results in far more apparent bass.
Is this burping a normal thing on open designs?
** Maybe you can try a little " gripe water " ...........
