That's cost generally they do!! Come on, are you
suggesting that a £200 jap amp compares in any way sonically to say a
Krell
or Mark Levinson or even an Arcam A90?
Yes absolutely. However, you have to make sure that both
amplifiers are kept out of clipping, and that the current
delivery required is within their design parameters.
The main technical difference between a cheapy amp and
the Krells, MLs etc is that these more expensive amps
have a much higher power output and that they are capable
of driving more severe loads.
Try a Krell, an ML etc against any £ 200 amp driving
something easy like 11 or 15 ohm LS3/5a making sure the
power output is identical, and you won't find any
difference in sound quality. However, try a Krell or a
cheapy amp driving Apogee Scintillas, and there will
clearly be a difference.
I suspect that a Behringer A500 would not have problems with Apogees.
Probably not as the A500 is a pro-amp designed for severe loads. Shows you
don't have to spend thousands if you're not worried about the label.
I think borosteve was probably thinking along the lines of the smaller
Denons, H-K, Marantz and the like, normal consumer "hi-fi" amps.
