Default Denon arrives

A courier staggered out of a blizzard this afternoon, (three inches of
snow here now), and delivered the Denon.

It was described in the auction as used and excellent.
A better description would have been.. Removed from box with kid
gloves, used for 10 minutes, 2 presets tuned in, carefully replaced in
original packing with all accessories, original interconnect, AM loop
and an unread manual then carefully stored for 20 years.

Not a scuff, mark or sign that it has ever been out of box before,
totally mint and 100% working order.

A quick reseat of the internal connectors and a going over with
contaclean and pipe cleaners and I've been listening to radio 3 with a
good loud burst of the Bob Harris* show, and yes it is an improvement
over the receiver, bass seems more extended and voices are more 'alive'

The Radio 3 burble is still there but can be silenced by using the
Super Narrow IF setting so maybe our aerial system is not quite
perfect. Listening on loudspeakers the background is effectively silent

On long wave very good, hardly any local interference and lots of
continental stations with just the loop.

Overall I am an exstatic (geddit) bunny.

* With all the space on DAB and Freeview, I think it's time for BBC
Radio Bob. He could time share with BBC Radio Mike Harding if he finds
the hours too much.

They seem to be the standard FM aerial fitted by the average company.
Loads round here. Thumping great UHF aerials which simply aren't needed
here since CP is so closee - but a grotty FM omni which will do nothing
for the multipath.

I'm sure they exist, but none of the communal systems I've come across
have decent FM reception.

Well its a a negative gain item compared with a dipole. Its got no
directional characteristics which make it a very poor receive aerial
i.e. no directional discrimination. Its used by riggers because its
cheap and its an "eff emm" aerial innit..

Not much else to say for it really, and Bill Wright don't much care for
them either..

I wouldn't give it mast room!..

I've got a 4 element Yagi some 30 miles from Concrete-a-borough and its
fine .. noise free no burbles.

My mistake, I didn't make my meaning clear.

I was asking why you "betcha as much as you like" that it used a halo. I had
assumed, wrongly as it turns out, that a *communal* aerial system would use
something better.

I wouldn't give it mast room!..

No more would I.

I get a similar noise-free - no burbles from a dipole in the loft, but then
I'm only 5 miles from the transmitter (half of that distance being over
water). In the old days when I had to rely on Wrotham some 60-odd miles away
I used a 7-element yagi, and it wasn't always burble-free.

David.

So you would have thought, but a lot of these are anything but well
arranged . Usually the cheapest quote is the one that gets the job..

Shouldn't suppose it was at that distance;!..

Mind you don't get overloaded..
