The echo seems to work ok.

My newsreader news.eternal-september.org is playing up and won;t allow
me
to
reply to some posts here - hence replying to my own reply which seemed
to
have worked! Now to see if it will allow me to post this!

I'm using eternal september too. I haven't noticed any problems apart
from the odd failure to open any kind of connection at all.

I tried to reply to Bob Latham and got refused with the reason 'header
too
long' being given on a number of occasions and 'duplicate message' on
others. Nothing has/had been changed or is out of the ordinary on this
machine!

My reply to Bob was along the lines that the cheap USB decks (includes a
not
so cheap Denon model, I believe) would be well up to creating a maybe
somewhat 'lesser' copy of the music for on the move; I would not need a
cdr h
replacement for occasions when I would actually play the LP. Also to add
I
don't have any problem with Linn decks.

OK. I've never seen anything like that. Quite often it is a problem
with the programme you are using - all of a sudden it decides to start
posting illegal characters.

It's a bit unnerving when it just decides to fight you and you haven't
made
any changes to the programme (settings etc.)!

Just had a quick poke around google for forums discussing Microsoft
Mail as a newsreader. I know these places tend to distill all the
problems, but I would say you have got off lightly so far.

My problem is I've no idea how to fix anything like this. I'm heavily
dependent on these progs working properly as it seems to have done up 'til
now!

Give Gravity a try, much easier to set up, configure and use than WM.

The comment about my Linn LP12/Ittok wasn't aimed at you, more the
puritans who don't seem to understand that it is possible to prefer
something that isn't perfect to that which supposedly is.

Where on earth do you get the idea that those of us who prefer CD are
"puritans"?

Compared to LP CD is cheaper, easier to get hold of, easier to store and
play. Furthermore it doesn't require so much care in handling and is usable
in portable and car players.

Compared to all that LP would have to be significantly better in performance
terms to be worth bothering with. Given that it's actually worse there's no
contest IMO.

David.

Thanks Ken, I'll try to set up a separate newsfeed account alongside
eternal-september.

I don't use music on the move much Keith but I am looking towards getting
my music on a NAS box and an ethernet connection to some reader that gives
spdif out to feed my Arcam AV8.

OK.

No worries, I didn't take the comment personally - my remark meant quite
simply I'm not a Linn-basher and although I don't use Linn myself I've got
no problem with anyone who does and/or is enthusiastic about it!

What news server address do I use, Ken?

David no sane person could contest your arguments about the superiority of
CD over LP in many respects but the truth for some of us is nothing beats
putting on a record. It's almost a certainty that virtually every 'vinylist'
has a collection of CDs as well: there are hundreds here in various places
about the house....

I don't dispute that. Most of us, I guess, have collections of both. I was
merely curious as to why Bob calls those of us who don't find that "nothing
beats putting on a record" "puritans". A bit like a classic car enthusiast
calling someone who prefers the reliabilty and convenience of a modern car a
"purist".

David.

Done that and struggling to get any newsgroups now! WTF does "it is
necessary to force the client to send authentication data" mean?

Told you I was dependent on these programs running without causing any
problems!
