You might think they add something to the discussion. Experience says they
usually don't.

Dave has stated that he is unwilling to open them for the risk of
viruses, (!!) and also that he cannot be bothered to look at them. I
translate this as "Don't confuse me with facts, my mind is made up!"

The computer I use for email can only work with standard files. I simply
can't be bothered transferring stuff to the PC unless there is a very good
reason. With the sort of things you and Keith post for listening to, there
isn't.

Not surprising given how much he contradicts himself.

Retirement doesn't suit you, Dave. Your comprehension
skills are deteriorating fast. Get out of that rocking chair,
and build yourself a valve amp, there is no better therapy.

I gave up building valve amps some 40 years ago, Iain. Some do learn there
is no point trying to develop things beyond their natural end.

I am sure we could organise a wip round to get you a
turntable. It could be the start of a new life:-)

You might actually try building some equipment from start to finish rather
than mostly farming it out to pros. But then this assumes you have the
skills which I doubt. You don't sound like you enjoy getting your hands
dirty.

Not a 'room' though. Sounds like you've never actually made such a
thing. ;-)

Yes I feel it sounds like you are calling Iain a *liar* with almost every
response you make to his posts without actually using the word.

Yes, one wonders why he bothers to subscribe here - unless it's just to air
the minutiae of his job in broadcasting.

That's not a problem, I don't post stuff for your benefit in any case. I
learned long ago that you were one of those types who knows when it's better
not to look! ;-)

'Natural end'?? Open your eyes - valve amps are selling like hot cakes all
round the world!!

Hey-Ho-Daddy-"O", you are prolly the only one left who does and can
build anything. There isn't anyone I know South of 50 odd these days who
could make an amp valve or solid state..

We are no longer a manufacturing nation anyway. I'm beginning to wonder
what we are any good at;!...

Whilst PCBs were widely used for mass-produced valve equipment, especially
TVs, in the 1960s they were not without problems. The heat conducted through
the valve pins, or through the lead-outs of high-wattage resistors, caused
localised over-heating and charring of the (invariably SRBP) board. This
lead to the need to use things such as long-pinned valveholders which are
likely no longer available.

Yes UK consumer goods of the time .. kept the TV trade in business
nowadays its the re cycling trade. A visit to the tip last week saw no
less than 4 CRT tellies and Six flat panel ones...

I think the highest reading I have had on my meter was 525 volts - it's
funny how quiet and slow everything goes while you are holding the probe!
:-)

Morning Keith,

Morning Iain,

That's a serious voltage!

I have a Solartron (valve) bench psu that can manage
600VDC at 500mA. People get used to the routine
of working with valves - switching off the DC from
the bench PSU, and switching on the discharge box
wired across the reservoir caps of the amp becomes
second nature.

An open valve amp chassis commands a lot of respect:-)

It did from me! :-)

watch the anodes glow cherry red:-)

Tubes are better for people who don't know what they are doing, are
careless, and/or have slow reaction times.

What I do find surprising is those who are so shoddy with design and
construction they find valves forgiving are still here to tell the tale,
given the voltages involved...

1.5 kV here, can't remember the valves in use might have been DT100's or
something like that;?...
