But Jim got his subjects mixed up and answered: "Louie Armstrong".

It would give your fiction more verisimilitude

Huh?

if you'd said I'd answered "Armstrong Siddeley".

But Jim, it was a joke to tie in with your fetish for long forgotten
Jazz recordings, Neil Armstrong - Louie, geddit? Oh never mind...

Beyond that, I'll leave you to your conspiracy theories about why people
may not always do whatever you tell them to do.

You find me compelling reading.......

BTW you may find the *next* issue of HFN worth reading given your
hobby-horses...
Can't promise, but keep your eyes open. ;-

Ask your Ed to send me a copy, he's got my address.

Jim
I try to keep away from this group, but you've learned the art
of baiting and the above has me hooked.
But who has your editor given NOS'ing to?
20+ years ago it was your boss who revealed the impact of digital
filtering and all it's variant implementations (MC and NK seemed
to use an Etch-A-Sketch on acid testing LLC and/or Digimaster).
Only your boss could do it right.
Back then if we use LLC as an example they marketed models that
though they were seemingly identical models based around either
of their "1 bit DAC's" (2026 or 2028) and models such as 801/802 or
901. Superficially there were models that only had one difference -
a fitted or detachable figure-of-eight mains cord. But even you
didn't know until recently that inverting the PSU's polarity resulted
in dramatic sonic differences, but with LLC models, the power cord
configuration was indicative of other changes too.
I have two 901's, one with fitted cord and one IEC-60320 C-1 type,
The fitted is on LLC players with the safe option slow roll off filter,
the ones with Figure 8 is the almost NONOS type filter.
Over the years there have been heaps of variants of filter implementations,
but all opt for the safe option of 24 bit running chipsets with VC
filters. Even your pal NK and his side kick DP reviewed/tested
such a machine this month and still they don't understand.
Back in the early days of CD and multibit DAC's some offered
such machines that were hinted at being NONOS, these were
almost always based around "piggy-backed" TDA1543 or TDA1545's
I had an Accuphase, and of course there was the Stan Curtis
Cambridge model, and recently Project marketed such a DAC,
but I stand my ground, "piggy-backing" is oversampling by subtefuge.
That side line you have to perk up your pension penning articles
for a mag, where is that going?
To the masses audio is a laptop connected to an active plastic
box sub and two sat's, or SSD devices with in ear phones listening
to compressed downloads or rips. And in your mag recently KK
patronised SSD/in-ear music listeners as hoodies listening to crap,
young peeps are not like that, they love well structured music
from Buddy Holly through to Abba, from 3 minute 70's pop ditties
through to Paul McCartney to Bob Marley, Dusty Springfield through
to Madonna, from Carly Simon, Carol King through Glen Miller to Elvis.
But...
The "high end" is over-priced kak. who is going to buy 27 grand
digital amplifiers or 40 grand loudspeakers? There is no longer
any entry level hardware, nowhere for a potential HiFi buff to start
at an affordable point.
And I've followed the mags, and know how much they get wrong
and in some instances mislead. And I've heard and owned the
hardware, been delighted and disappointed in equal measure.
So if your mag is to try my "hobby horse", it's got my interest but
also my doubts, your boss is the only one who will know what
he is doing (20 odd years ago before I knew of the webby thing,
it was from him I learned of digital filters) so if it's not your boss
doing NONOS then anyone else will get it wrong, and nobody has
asked me! So I won't be holding my breathe.
And your column Jim, it needs a bit of oomph, you need to hurl
a few home truths, throw a few rocks. You know what I'm talking
about.

Sorry to snip out of context, but I must admit I laughed at that point. :-)

Basic rule in writing: show, don't tell. If you "know what you are talking
about" then write your *own* articles and set about getting them published
in a mag or on the web. I'll go on focussing on what interests me.

FWIW At the moment my main interests are elsewhere. Partly in the garden
fixing some of the damage a 'professional' gardner inflicted yesterday.
(Broken flowers and trellis work.) Partly on finding out some of the quirks
of audio players and files that mean some people won't be hearing what they
assume. People might expect that playing a flac and wave version of the
same material would output the same results, but in computing you can't
take anything for granted... :-)

Jim

Well it is possible for swapping over Live and Neutral to alter either the
hum level or ease of RFI injection. Depends on if the PSU is lousy. But I
can't comment on FULs claims wrt DACs.

Yes Jim, dump those interesting technical articles illustrated with
graphs, it is so last century. What we want is an in depth expose of the
contents of Posh Spice's handbag and pictures of topless wimmin.

Any progress on finding a NOS V15 stylus? it must be 3-4 years since I
sent you the V15 body.

Alas, no. Still haven't found anyone who has them. The closest I got was
the Stylus company who can do replacements. But when they checked the ones
I have they said. "What you have is in excellent condition. Wouldn't make
sense to replace them."
