BBC FM channels back to normal, or even better than before,
although this might be because I paid a visit to the loft

Three weeks from your first post and advice.

Except that after the problem became noticibly bad, the first
places I looked at were the Arquiva website which was rather
unhelpful, and the BBC website, but made the mistake of using
the 'search' facility which is useless.

Only by going through 'teletext' did I find a page referring
to the website page where reception problems might be found.

So I actually cleaned up the connections three weeks ago, but
with the transmitter on reduced power, it only had a
marginal, if any improvement at that time.

The engineering works has been going on for almost 2 months.

Periods of reduced transmitter power are useful. You use them to sort
out your signal path.
