I'm auditioning a pair of B&W DM2As and I have to say I'm *very* impressed.
Talk about size and weight - my Ruark floorstanders weigh 28 kg eack, these
muthas (standmounters, mind) only weigh 22.2 kg each.....!!!

Does anybody know anything about these? Were/are they rated? (I gather they
are from about 1975, but as Michael Caine once so famously stated - they're
in lovely condition...)

I've got the manual which is full of techie stuff like a Buel & Kjaer
readout (right hand speaker only) and 'polar response' charts but it doesn't
state a straightforward Sensitivity Figure other than to say:

"Sensitivity - 13 watts into nominal 8 ohm impedance required to produce a
sound pressure level of 95 dB at one metre at 400 Hz."

What does this translate into?

I already know they are pretty sensitive because they are *well large* at a
relatively low volume setting on a 4 watt amp despite a recommended rating
of 25 to 60 wpc! (Book also says impedance never drops below 7 or rises
above 22 ohms, 20 Hz - 20 kHz**)

it, my kit weighs a ton and can get hotter'n Satan's arse if I've got two

My chromed steel racks (with painted concrete paving slab toppings) cost not
much over £30 each from *Argos* and cause me a lot less concern/expense than

Nice driver line-up for the day and eighth-wave transmission line loading
(compare for example to some IMF TLS designs).

About 84 dB for normal sensitivity specifications. (Reference is SPL
at 1 metre for a nominal 1 Watt: 13 Watts is +11 dB ref 1 Watt so you
have to take 11 dB from the 95 dB to normalize it).

The brochure in the B&W archive gives 9.2 V RMS pink noise for 95 dB
SPL which translates to a sensitivity of about 85 dB at 2.83 V RMS
(the nominal 1 Watt/8 ohms).

I already know they are pretty sensitive ...

I have to say that 84 - 85 dB is not what I usually consider as sensitive
although the impedance curve is undoubtedly valve-friendly.

Yes, delete my earlier remark about sensitivity - substitute 'it doesn't
seem to matter much what speakers (84, 88, 89, 91.5 dB and a pair of horns)
I use or which amp (4wpc or 32 wpc). the volume setting always ends up at
the 10/11 o' clock mark!!

They will probably sound very bass heavy stuck in the corner as in the pic.

They are mid 70's not sure of price but where not cheap

The guy who bought them off me, saw them at Hi Fi show when they first came
out, but could not afford them

I think I sold them for what they cost new.

Some are filled with a strange foam that breaks down and goes hard they
sound bad

Not many made with it, but if they have it in you can replace it

as an electronics design engineer at Marconi then, so it's all
relative! Ah, the good old days, when beer was 3 bob a pint!
