My line of work means I have to travel quite a bit.
I'm looking for a portable player to listen to music in B&B/hotel room
etc.
I'm fine for in the car
Most of my music is vinyl though I've quite a lot of classical and trance
CDs, also listen to radio quite a bit.
Thinking maybe something that plays MP3s as well as CD and radio, clock
would be handy as well.
Transportability is the major issue.

Any recommendations?

Apple I-Pod with the biggest harddisk, then rip your cd's and copy
everything in .wav-format to the I-Pod, then you have the best soundquality.
Use a good headphone, not the standard crappy things.
