1. noticed the 'video off' setting? The manual reckons if you isolate
the video circuits sound quality is improved (p.87). Only useful if you
don't use the video outputs of course :-)
I finally got around to attaching a 'scope to my Yamaha HD1300
yesterday. (A Tektronix TDS-420A.) With the HD1300 on pause I could
neither see nor hear any difference between the output with the video
signal switched off and on. The 'scope was set to 1mV per division and
set to display the RMS voltage levels of both channels.
Likewise I cannot hear any difference when playing music.
My conclusion is that on my HD1300, the video output has no material
effect on the audio output.
I did consider a DBT, but since I get negative results without going
to these lengths, this does not seem to be a worthwhile exercise.
Interesting Chris, thanks for that. I have to say that I'm not
particularly good at A/B listening tests and get disoriented quickly, so
your results are interesting.
Having said this, it's quite easy to A/B test the effect of the DAC by
switching the monitor in/out on the amp while recording an LP with
equalised levels (or in pause) - this is an A-D-A process I assume?
Anyways - I think I can detect a slight thickening of the sound. The
preamp and cables are other variables, but I don't remember noticing
this with another CD recorder.
