I doubt it. Those who are 'put off' by the 'churlish behaviour' are likely to be those who don't want their views challenged. If you wish such a group - where say valvies can discuss their hobby and make the most outrageous claims with impunity - then you need to set up a group where that is in the charter. UKRAV is such a group where vinyl enthusiasts can 'wax' lyrical about its 'advantages'. But even those who set it up - for the self same reasons as you seem to want - ignore it and post here. Draw your own conclusions. A group, I might add, that was formed with the intention of removing acrimony and contention from this group and rendered immediately pointless and futile by the inrush of the few 'antivinyl bigots' here too stupid to realise: a) that it was in their best interests* and b) they had won a form of victory and removed an unwanted topic from this group. Clearly, you didn't read the posts and/or you're just lying as usual. UKRAV is moribund because no one has anything interesting to say about vinyl. That's an example of 'perfect' English is it? 2/10 for another incorrect use of the word 'lays'. -- Chris Morriss Tough marking from you Chris:-) My Oxford English Dictionary gives: Lay. alt vb Lie, so maybe this is not incorrect after all. But in any case, let's not blame the Swede. Let's say it was my typo:-) I have lived in Scandinavia for 25 years, so English is not my first language any more either. Also, I am sure Arny won't mind:-) But let's not get too superior. I see from an article in The European that there are more than 7 million young people and adults in the UK whose literary skills in the English language are at or below primary school level, and an additional 3 million need assistance in completing a form or questionnaire. In contrast, most Scandinavians are fluent in two languages, with English as a strong third. How many of us, I wonder, could tell the same joke in Swedish? Cordially, Iain I responded in my rather supercilious manner simply because you claimed that it was perfect English. My respect for those you have (as so many Scandinavians have) an ability in English to surpass even native English speakers, (from St Neots for example) is undiminished. -- Chris Morriss |

My respect for Scandinavians' ability in English is undiminished.
Does that also apply to those of us on the ng that also speak Norwegian? (eller ikke) === Andy Evans === Visit our Website:- http://www.artsandmedia.com Audio, music and health pages and interesting links. |

Perhaps I should have written: "His pronunciation was faultless". My respect for those you have (as so many Scandinavians have) an ability in English to surpass even native English speakers, (from St Neots for example) is undiminished. It takes a lot of hard work. Have you ever tried to order an apple pie and cream in Danish? (the language not the pastry) You need to actually have the pie, or some of it, in your mouth, before the waiter can understand you:-) I use a Scandi keyboard and also a Scandi spelling checker, and type very fast with two fingers, so often my errors (I like to call them typos:-) slip through:-(( In another thread I wrote "genetive" instead of "genitive" I hope I will not be sent to stand in the corner wearing the dunces hat:-(( Cordially, Iain |

But the ability to speak common sense or nonsense about audio design isn't affected by one's linguistic skills, however a cunning linguist you may be :-) It would be nice to be able to understand Swedish as I'm a great fan of the current Scandinavian folk-rock bands like Garmarna, Hedningarna and Gjallarhorn. -- Chris Morriss |
