I really think we are going to have to play the parochial card here
and insist on someone western. Although maybe Bollywood will soon be
as English as curry.
Ok, if you want someone western, how about Emmylou Harris. Though my first
thought was Joni Mitchel as well.

Or Carol King, or Linda Ronstadt.
The list is very long

Yes, agreed, but I can't think of one who stands out as a major
influence. But I have heard JM's name crop up a lot as a influence when
hearing interviews on the radio with musicians.
I think JM can also be said to have introduced a lot to the outskirts of
jazz when she went from the LP like Blue to Mingus and Hejira(sp). And
Shodows and light IMHO has got some great moments. Ok, I have to admit
there is little that involved Pastorious that I don't like :-)
I would say she has influenced at least two generations of female singer
songwriters, from Susan Vega. I guess if I made the effort I could find
a list of people who quote here as influencial.
Oh, and I guess writing "Woodstock" could have been said to have
influenced quite a few people :-)
Ok, A bit of googleing, lets see what influences I can find (just for fun).
"She has been cited as an important influence on artists such as Sarah
McLachlan and Tori Amos"
"Former "first daughter" Chelsea Clinton was reportedly named for
Mitchell's tune "Chelsea Morning.""
"Mitchell was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1981 and
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. On May 1, 2002, she was
appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada. She received a Grammy
Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, with a citation describing her as
"one of the most important female recording artists of the rock era" and
"a powerful influence on all artists who embrace diversity, imagination
and integrity."
