Trevor is an established engineer who works on audio equipment day-in day-out. Stewart is a technician (?) in a print room with a big gob. Draw your own conclusions... ;-) **Not quite. I believe that Stewart is an engineer, whose hobby is audio. I am a trained (4 years, full time) technician. My training was in communications, but encompassed a wide variety of subjects. My service abilities appeared as a natural inclination, at about age 12, when I repaired the family TV set, after my dad was given a huge (for those days) quotation. It was so high, that he figured he'd let me try to fix it. By age 16 I was servicing my schoolmates' guitar amps. By 17, I was working (part time) for a local music shop, performing all their electronic service requirements. I did so, whilst still attending school. At 18, I was employed and trained full time, by OTC (Overseas Telecommunications Commission). I completed my training by age 22 and found myself being instructed by people (Engineers) who knew far less about electronics than I did. When an opportunity arose to become service manager for the local Marantz importer, I grabbed it. I worked there for 5 years, then started my own business. I am not an engineer, since an engineer has a university Degree. I do not. However, whilst I know a few very smart engineers, I also know a few that do not deserve the title. Stewart appears to be a competent engineer, based on what he writes. Our major difference is just that I (probably) see a much vaster range of equipment. -- Trevor Wilson www.rageaudio.com.au |

Dormouse is a failed wannabee who can never resist spiteful gobbing from the sidelines, but has nothing of substance to offer. **Not quite. I believe that Stewart is an engineer, whose hobby is audio. I am a trained (4 years, full time) technician. And pretty competent, judging by your posts - with a few obvious flaws, of course! :-) It doesn't matter in this game whether you're a Nobel laureate or an untrained hobbyist, it's what you *post* that counts. Clowns like Churches seem to feel that others should bow down to his superior 'knowledge' because he gets paid to make recordings. Not gonna happen on Usenet, baby! :-) My training was in communications, but encompassed a wide variety of subjects. It was so high, that he figured he'd let me try to fix it. By age 16 I was servicing my schoolmates' guitar amps. By 17, I was working (part time) for a local music shop, performing all their electronic service requirements. Sounds vaguely familiar.............. I still remember going out on the **** with Billy Connelly after working in Forbes Music Shop in Dundee, back when Billy was just a bad banjo player who told jokes to stop the crowd pelting him.... :-) I did so, whilst still attending school. At 18, I was employed and trained full time, by OTC (Overseas Telecommunications Commission). I completed my training by age 22 and found myself being instructed by people (Engineers) who knew far less about electronics than I did. Yup, still lots of 'paper engineers' around! :-) When an opportunity arose to become service manager for the local Marantz importer, I grabbed it. I worked there for 5 years, then started my own business. I am not an engineer, since an engineer has a university Degree. I do not. However, whilst I know a few very smart engineers, I also know a few that do not deserve the title. I know *lots*! :-) But then, I've worked for several major engineering companies, where these bozos usually get bounced upstairs..... :-( Stewart appears to be a competent engineer, based on what he writes. Aw, shucks! :-) Our major difference is just that I (probably) see a much vaster range of equipment. That's almost certainly true, but OTOH, I maintain that output ICs in 1983 CD players were definitely not superior to those used in modern players. In Meridian's case, until very recently, they were the same 5534s that they'd always used - despite much flak from dopey tweakos (not you!) who insisted that you need video jobbies like OPA45s to get the best from CD. Me, I use SSM2131s for my own stuff, but I don't care about component costs, because in this sense, I'm not being a *professional* engineer. -- Stewart Pinkerton | Music is Art - Audio is Engineering |

It's locked up a couple of times lately with the RCOD - Red Circle of Death ;-) Was using brand new Philips media, so that isn't the problem. Had any problems yourself or smooth running? The DVDR70 I have does 'crash' every now and then. In particular, when stopping and post-formatting or menu-updating a disc, or when finalising. This either leads it into seeming to be trying to do the same thing forever, or a 'red circle' and then shutdown. Trying to read/use a disc that has been treated like this then shows it has been toasted. This seems to happen about once every couple of months, and I need to unplug the recorder from the mains for 30 secs to get it to restart and work reliably. In my case I use the TDK DVD+R/W discs as TDK CD-R's have worked well with my CD-R recorder. I did get an 'upgrade' disc[1] from Philips a few months ago and installed the then-current version of the firmware. This seems to have reduced the occurances of the problems, but not eliminated them. [1] Actually, I got *three* upgrade discs as they kept promsing to send one, and it didn't arrive, so every couple of weeks I'd phone again and chase them. Got all kinds of excuses and inconsistent stories. Then three upgrade packs were delivered by the postman one morning. :-) When the DVDR70 works (most of the time) I regard it as excellent. Found it *very* useful for recording Proms from BBCTV4 via DTTV. Gives excellent results in my opinion. However the occasional crashes are annoying as they mean 'lost' recordings. I am hoping that in due course I will have some way to be able to read some of the 'toasted' discs as some worked prior to the attempted finalisation, so I assume the index and data are there on the temporary areas. I have wondered if a sort of 'cover the finalised area with ink' fiddle might work, but haven't been able to find info on this. The idea being to trick the recorder into treating the disc as being 'unfinalised' as opposed to being confused by the corrupted 'finalised' info.
