Convinced yourself of that.... haven't you. "Expectation effect"? ;-) No, level-matched DBT. The owner of the 588 wasn't happy! :-) DBTs are not immune to expectation effect... Provided they are used (as they should be) on subjects who expect to hear a difference, then they are. Why do you think DBTs should only be used with subjects who *expect* to hear differences, Don? Think about it. Take a bunch of subjects who say "there won't be a difference" and you will get a bunch of random guesses, showing no pattern. This will be the likely result whether there is actually a difference or not. But use subjects who believe there is a difference, and have some personal investment in hearing one, and if there is a difference, it will be found. d Pearce Consulting http://www.pearce.uk.com |

However the occasional crashes are annoying as they mean 'lost' recordings. I'm surprised you don't just use your RPC with an Irlam i16 with digital input. I've found mine - using a 35 quid IDE burner - pretty reliable. With probably cheaper blanks. Of course, adding extra wiring is easy in this house - perhaps yours is not. -- *If tennis elbow is painful, imagine suffering with tennis balls * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

Take a bunch of subjects who say "there won't be a difference" and you will get a bunch of random guesses, showing no pattern. This will be the likely result whether there is actually a difference or not. Yes... I'm sure "expectation effect" can work like that. Thus we have to be careful when taking advice from religious dogmatists, whether they [allegedly] lean toward objectiveness or subjectiveness. But use subjects who believe there is a difference, and have some personal investment in hearing one, and if there is a difference, it will be found. Consider the seemingly innocuous subject of "bedside manner" and the profound physiological influence this can have in medical DBTs. Those who have strongly held predetermined opinions may unwittingly influence the performance of subjects, and there is the question of confidence that the test conditions are suitably analogous to the real-world scenario. [The "it will be found" conclusion is rather presumptuous and optimistic.] Give me 200+ subjects who can detect no difference in properly conducted unbiased trials, then we're talking... The "bedside manner" thing is exactly why trials are made double blind. The proctor administering the trial must be unaware of which is which, otherwise he can influence the result - wittingly or not. And of course if an adequately sized DBT fails to identify a diffidence, why would it be presumptuous to conclude that there was no difference? d Pearce Consulting http://www.pearce.uk.com |
