DVD- Vs -CD player
I own a very old Sony CDP - 990 CD player, which has served me brilliantly
for more years than I care to remember. However, last year, I visited Richer Sounds for one of their Sunday clearance sales and picked up a Sony DVP S735D for just £30. Looking at the unit, it appeared to had never been plugged in and the manual and remote were still in their sealed packaging. The 735 received rave reviews a few years ago and cost around £500. After setting it up, I found the picture quality superb. However, a couple of nights ago, I happened to drop a CD into the 735 and quite frankly, was knocked out by the sound quality reproduced by this primarily DVD player. Anyone else found DVD players as good or better than CD players for playing CD's? Cheers all tox |

Plenty of them, in particular the Pioneer DV-575a is very good and will play damn near *anything* and is only about a hundred spons. (HFN doesn't seem to rate it much for CD though..... ;-) |

It ain't about DVD-vs-CD players but about old-vs-new technology.

Cheers all tox Well, my Sony DVP-S7700 has a dual laser system so it's supposed to have a mechanism accuracy that is superior to most CD players. I think the transport was used in Mark Levinson CD players. However, I personally don't think it sounds better than my base-level Rotel RCD-855 cd player. Maybe I need a new preamp? -Rich |

I recently bought a 575A to replace my trusty 515 for movies, and on CD it's sonically indistinguishable from the Meridian 588. That's good enough for me.................. -- Stewart Pinkerton | Music is Art - Audio is Engineering |

My new (made in China) Pioneer DV-575A is sonically indistinguishable from the Meridian 588 on CD, plays anything that fits in the slot, and generates great pictures. It also cost about a quarter of the DV-515 it replaced. Use nothing, or relays. * Dump the output ICs and use something decent. * Dump the series resistors after the output ICs. Yes, I bought mine to replace a DV-350 (to get Progressive Scan and Component Out - I'm not interested in multichannel sound) and even the dear old 350 is plenty good enough for me on CD and MP3s.... |

As yet another owner of a Pioneer DV-575A I am curious about what the
above modifications will achieve and why? |
