I've got a turntable, amp, laptop and Cooledit.
I want to copy some LP's to the laptop to burn to CD.
When I connect the tape phono cable input to the mic socket on the
laptop the recording is too loud. I can't attenuate it enough but I
don't have a line in socket on the laptop.
Is there anything I can do?
- external USB sound card? - any recommendations

Only yesterday I was contemplating the saying, "there's nothing like the
right tool for the job, and this is *nothing like* the right tool for
the job."
Yes, you need a sound card; I don't use USB for this so won't try to
recommend. Suggest you begin with Google

Thanks Nick, but surely the laptop has a soundcard, it plays CDs it
has a line-out/headphone jack that I can put through an amp, the
problem is the lack of line-in. I am assuming from your post that the
mic in won't work - I've never used one before.

Suggest you get a decent external 'soundcard' processor such as a
Soundblaster Extigy. This is all but designed to do this job

Yes, but unfortunately it's a crap one. And if the only input to it
is through a mic socket, that's I'm afraid going to be even crappier.
If you MUST use the laptop, look at a USB (just about adequate but
obsolete) or Firewire audio interface. If there's a desktop machine
around, use that. Even on a SoundBlaster card, Line In is pretty good
quality (though Mic In is still very questionable).

Hi - I think it might be worth trying one of these things:
http://uksoundcards.co.uk/h_GG9201-sound-card.html
creative MP3+. I've got an apparently posh version of the same thing that
you can have for a, er, bargain price, an opcode sonicport. You plug the
USB
into the laptop, which can then send/receive digital or analogue.Could
never
get it to work properly in win98 but works natively in XP, and very good
it
is too. I don't understand one poster's 'obsolete USB' reference.
HTH
Rob
USB 1.0 or 1.1 old but works, 12 megabit per second transfer,
USB 2.0 also known as 'fast USB' 480 megabit per second etc
