Cracking carts IMO - incredibly sweet, and track the dreaded inner
grooves like few others (I've been using an OC9 for a while). I'll send
you that OC3 (v. similar to the OC9) for a mess around in the fullness
of time ;-)

Yes, I'm very pleased. The OC5 is detailed, clear and very full-bodied.
Tracks lovely, as you say and delivered a *serious* lower register from the
violin in my customary post-prandial Larka - the *definitive* Boult/NPO/Bean
version which is mine (and Serge's) favourite!! On my staple Laurie
Andersons, it projects vocals nicely forward of the mix and is quite forward
overall. (A 'big panty' cart maybe, but no hoe!! ;-)

I played it back to back with my newly-acquired ultra l/o Ortofon MC200
(0.09 mV) and the differences were pronounced. The Orto is a waif-like thing
by comparison, but no less captivating in a totally different way - still
projecting vocals forward but with a much deeper and more distant and
possibly slightly less distinct soundstage. (That wispy bint with the long,
blonde hair in Lord Of The Rings by comparison? ;-)

So, no favourite/winner/whatever yet - far too early and I had just changed
valves which hasn't helped, but it does look like there will be two
different horses for categorically different courses here!! :-)

But....

Interestingly, I followed them immediately with my 'bread and butter' daily
hack (MM cart, name withheld - I'm getting too much competition on eBay for
needles as it is) and it simply said 'OK wodger wanna do then - play a bit
o' music or summat??' and off it went! *Not* ****e - every note and nuance
is still there, the tone is sublime and the 'rhythm' very satisfying as
usual! Vocals not particularly forward and soundstage not quite as extended
but still deep, nevertheless. (Helped by the triodes, obviously). I still
say if it were the only cart I had, I'd not complain!!


I'll send
you that OC3 (v. similar to the OC9) for a mess around in the fullness of
time ;-)

for a catch-up. We'll include it in the usual trading of wampum, fish-hooks
and axe-heads - I'll see if I can find the 'spare' V15/III which seems to
have disappeared somewhere, a while back!!

Hi Keith,

One of the nice things about modern SS amps is that the 'optimum
operating point' is anywhare from the noise floor up to 90% of full
power, so as long as the little beastie isn't audibly clipping,
there's no problem. In fact, I have my own main system set up so that
the volume control is at -6dB at the clipping point for 0dB FS on my
CD player. Gives you much more control when playing quietly, as
opposed to so many lunatic mainstream amps where you can only use the
bottom quarter of the control. I guess there really are people so dumb
that they think an amp is more powerful if you get full output with
the volume control only a quarter up....

swap the valves around - then get decent used Mullard ECC83 and ECC82,
and replace dodgy Chinese KT88s with Svetlana's , or Mullard EL34s or
GE(C) 7581a/KT66 - this amp will take a lot of power valves.

These amps are INCREDIBLY reliable so far, the build beats many other
manufacturers, so hang in there and get the right valves.

Stewart what is more reliable a Prima Luna or a Meridian ??- I know the
answer, you need to rethink Chinese manufacturing - you're out of date
