(Fit were valves you'd think you were out of the optimum operating range.... Hi Keith, One of the nice things about modern SS amps is that the 'optimum operating point' is anywhare from the noise floor up to 90% of full power, so as long as the little beastie isn't audibly clipping, there's no problem. In fact, I have my own main system set up so that the volume control is at -6dB at the clipping point for 0dB FS on my CD player. Gives you much more control when playing quietly, as opposed to so many lunatic mainstream amps where you can only use the bottom quarter of the control. I guess there really are people so dumb that they think an amp is more powerful if you get full output with the volume control only a quarter up.... These days, at least as far as valve amps are concerned there is no need, with the exception of RIAA, for high gain preamp stages. I think that Morgan J got it right when he stated that an ideal sensitivity for a valve power amp was 2V for full power, so that a power amp with a stepped attenuator on it's grid can be fed direct from a CD player. I followed his advice on my 50W push pull parallel power amplifier, which runs with the gain control nicely between 1 and 3 o-clock. He also said "No preamplifier is better than any preamplifier" Clever people these Welshmen:-) In these days of high level sources, pentode front ends are definitely out of fashion:-) Iain |

I think I'll build a KISS amp with one power darlington transistor, as I have a pair in the junkbox. Modern CDs are at 0dB all of the time so no gain will be required. -- Eiron No good deed ever goes unpunished. |

I just did:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/AS%20SP101.JPG Cracking little bugger for only 60 quid brand new with warranty!! You really can do better than that. Get yourself a NAD 3020 or a Cyrus 1 from ebay. They can be had for around 30-40 quid, both types are pretty robust and long lasting and have decent sound quality for the money. Either will completely toast the one in your picture. Tony |

I mean just think - if you could meet the performer and he said, "try listening to it this way", you might get a bit more out of it. Meet the performer....??? (How many people get to do that?) It's a nice day and there's new kit to play wiv, so the avoidance of serious work is being undertaken with some rigour shay mwah....** I've recorded a whole side of a fairly wacky album (Side 2 first, naturally..) with the new/old Technics deck on the new/new toy amp's own phono stage and my recently acquired new/old/NOS Goldring Mk II high output (2.5 mV) MC cart. Here is the first track for your delectation and approbation: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Track%2006.mp3 Let me know if you can take/want more (there is some diversity between the ensuing trax)... Enjoy!! :-) **Although I'm gonna hafta get the hoover out and dynamite the bog at some stage - due to an audiophile guest coming round this evening!! :-) |

My observations of Cyrus 1s is that they go for more like 80 quid - I considered one for a while, until I realised that Cyrus 2s often go for similar money (normally about 120, but they vary quite a bit). My 25 quid C2 was pure luck - right place at the right time. -- Wally www.wally.myby.co.uk |

(I don't know if it's just me or Pipex falling on its arse again!!??) Sounds like the riff from "Wall Street Shuffle". Not the sort of thing could make an assessment from, though. Wasn't really looking for an 'assessment' this time - the track was purely for your 'delectation and approbation' as above!! :-) (Comparisons are another matter....) |

Track 8, I have to ask what is it for? It sounds like it might be a bit of incidental music from a film or TV show. Again no bottom end, though - 65Hz is quite strong, but nothing below that. Two questions: What is the tiny voice (female?) in the background of track 10 at 1:02 saying? Sounds summat like "xxx xxx xxx yet?"....??? I think she is saying "do you know if he's in yet?", although the first words are drowned out by the singer. (Trouble is it was so long ago now I can't remember which damn cart it was!!) Well, the assessment would be that it has gone well, although the frequency range and dynamics represented here (the bit with the female speaking is very noisy) are hardly taxing. And you could chop off everything below about 60Hz without loss. But that isn't the fault of your system - that's just how the record is. *Arny's transatlantic dismissal of yet another amplifier he hasn't even heard....!! ;-) Move over to Plusnet.
