So you considered pop single 45s in their heyday generally to be of the
highest quality, Iain?

A good 12" 45 is probably the best vinyl sound you can get - transients are
*stunning* and bass is incredible on the right kit!

(But you already *know* that, don't you? ;-)

They were intended for use on Dansette players and juke boxes.

And you are/were actually employed as a mastering engineer?

Yes. It was a part of the Decca training. I worked for two years
with senior cutting enginner Harry Fisher, under the auspices of
Cyril Windebank, chief engineer. I had my own cutting ID.

...so it must be true!

On the telly, earlier this evening, Paul Gambaccini was reported as having
said he thought the 7" vinyl single could outlive the CD!!

As I said here a long time ago - vinyl singles are on the up. Don't hold
me to these figures but I believe the recent UK sales have been along the
following lines:

2001 - £178,000 (approx)

2005 - over a £million!

Can any of us say: "Dance Club"?

Sure, say what you like (you usually do) - this is ukra, moderated only by
polite, British reserve and the omnipresent fear by some of getting their
scrota ripped off (figuratively speaking) if they get outta line...

But if you mean 'DJ' use, I don't think many of them use 7" singles these
days? (Ignore the £ signs btw - those figures probably relate to numbers
sold, not value thereof...)

If I remember correctly they showed 7" singles by Arctic Monkeys and Keane.
Hardly what you'd call dance music.

Well, I can say "DJ" if it helps... :-)

I noticed when comparing BPI and RIAA figures that the BPI ones
distinguished between 7" and 12" vinyl singles, but didn't mention 'EP.
Whereas the RIAA ones gave values for 'LP+EP' combined, and also for 'vinyl
singles' without distinguishing by disc diameter.

Is there a difference between the UK and USA in the form of non-LP vinyl
discs people use for applications like 'DJ' or 'Club' or whatever the local
term might be?

IIRC at one time the French were far keener on 7" EP than the UK.

Slainte,

Jim

Purely by co-incidence I just put up this page...

http://www.st-and.demon.co.uk/AudioM...ndLPsales.html

If you wish to comment on 7" sales, then you might also like to consider
those for 12" singles as well. :-)

Naturally I am pleased to hear this because the sound quality from some
of these little buggers (at 45 rpm) can be very good indeed and I love
playing them myself! I have often said that a couple of kids playing a
stack of singles back in the 60s probably got more enjoyment from them
than some of the 'audiophiles' do today on the most expensive kit!

I heard a report about this on R4 last night. The report included a comment
attributed to a BPI spokesman to the effect that, "They may be buying them
for 'fashion' reasons as many of the purchasers probably have no way to
play them."

Jim

Is that music shipped or bought, and does it include independents? Other
sources include:

http://www.soundscan.com/about.html

Two key difficulties arise:

1. Pirate CDs. In China (apparently - I went to Shanghai recently) it's
positively unusual to buy a genuine CD (or genuine most things come to
that).

2. Second hand vinyl. Right now, about 100,000 (vs 170,000 CDs) on eBay
UK alone.

If anyone is trying to estimate the popularity of a particular music
format I'd be pretty wary of music industry figures. But a nice little
synopsis as it goes :-)

Agreed - I lived with an IFPI secretary for 7 years and got to hear about a
few of the 'goings on'....!!

I was also told recently that some organisation (??) is phoning companies to
see if they can 'unlicensed music' being *broadcast* in their workplace...??
