At the moment we have an old set of computer speakers running out of
the line out from a walkman type cd player. The sound is awful and we
need volume to get decent sound but I'm thinking the upstairs
neighbours don't think much of this.
Depending on the extent of sound insulation and the neighbour's
attitude, I think you're always going to have problems until you move.
I've lived in flats and shared housing most of my adult life, and
managed blocks of flats and maisonettes, and sound insulation has always
been dreadful. Even some terraced housing/semi-detached doesn't do a
good job.
New build *looks* better (concrete rafts between floors), and I gather
the building regs have tightened this up. Even so, the fact remains that
music etc late at night is likely to be audible, and could bother some
people.
So, on a prevention basis, is moving an option?!
Looking at these.... anyone heard these?

I've heard the non-active version, and they sounded fine, with plenty of
bass for the size. Each speaker will need access to a mains plug I would
have thought, and the controls don't look too accessible.
I'd go for a second hand ebay integrated amp (NAD, Rotel, Mission,
Pioneer) and some named (Tannoy, Mission, NAD) bookshelf speakers -
cheaper, more versatile, and possibly a better sound.
