I presumed that PJ wasn't referring to Paul Michell the geologist
who died in 1793.

Indeed yes, and a true craftsman of the old school.

Not really, since CD has no need of precision mechanical engineering
outside the transport, which is almost always a perfectly adequate OEM
Sony or Philips unit.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I was talking to John recently about
manufacturing phono cables for Michell decks and he sounded fine then but I
guess that does'nt mean too much. He was a fine engineer and a good man. A
very sad loss indeed.
