However it is hard to decide what 'harm' publication would cause them *if* the snippets and selective interpretations they gloss onto them aren't simply 'spin'. The figures I have seen seem to be those which show 'improvements' in one area or another, but with other areas unmentioned. People cannot dispute or interpret your figs if you don't release any:-) My comment is based on the BPI documents I have seen that were openly available at the time. Afraid I have no other figures of my own for the UK, although one or two people have made comments to me about this. You may be unaware, Iain, of the curious situation that UK MPs have dropped themselves into as a result of the way they behaved when they worked on the basis that they could keep 'secret' their actual expenses claims. They insisted that publication wasn't necessary, and would not show that the facts differed from their saying all was well. Yet the facts turn out to be otherwise. Yes. I read The European and also The Daily telegraph several times a week. Surely Michael Martin cannot survive such a disgraceful business? (Sorry, that's strictly OT) Afraid that I am rather dubious of the way this 'scandal' is going. Martin was basically defending what the MPs *wanted* him to defend. Now the murder is out they are blaming him for previously doing as they wanted. Afraid the word 'scapegoat' comes to my mind. I am also dubious of the humbug in the press about 'fiddles'. Try to find out how the owners and editors of various UK newspapers have curious tax status or treat their own 'expenses', etc. I am also dubious of the "they are *all* corrupt" view fostered. Many, perhaps. All, I doubt. But it is more convenient for the press to attack MPs as a class. Helps the press get its feeling of power, and its income. TBH my own view is that 'Private Eye' is about the best way to keep a tab on such matters. Shows a side of many issues like this which the popular UK press seem somehow to omit. :-) Over the years I've also noticed how often PE exposes a problem for months or years before it suddenly becomes an 'exclusive expose' in the press or on the BBC. Yes, all OT. :-) Slainte, Jim -- Change 'noise' to 'jcgl' if you wish to email me.
