Omnis are ideal as hand held vocal mics.

** Only true for film and TV interview work.

When sound reinforcement is in place, the extra gain before
feedback of a cardioid ** VOCAL MIC ** is almost essential.

The proximity effect also adds to that extra gain very significantly.

Well of course the traditional large diaphragm condenser mics were all
switchable between omni, cardioid and fig eight due to having two
diaphragms one on each side of the capsule.

** True.

By matrixing these you get the various DPs.

** Totally FALSE !!!!!!

No matrixing of two signals is involved, a far simpler and more
technically elegant method is used.

See the schematic of any famous " variable pattern " condenser
mic for the details.

Cos this know nothing, PIG IGNORANT pommy ****

HAS NO ****ING IDEA !!

What advantage do you feel PZMs would bring? Generally, they're a
neat idea desperately looking for an application :-)

Indeed. I've played with them without much success. Only time I do use
something like that is to mic up the front of a car for filming - a small
mic mounted on the windscreen behind the mirror can sometimes work very
well. But I'm not certain if this is pressure zone or parabola effect.

Yes, I know you can just both sing into the same mic... but the other
vocal part is a female voice so will probably need different EQ. She's
also not as loud as me so... two tracks would be better!

(...)

I'm doing two-part solos with one mic.
It's a lot of trouble to get stereo compared with your assets.

I've got an old Neumann CMV3 you can have cheap, if you don't mind 'Berühren
Sie nicht - Privateigentum von A.H.' scratched on the back of it...??

OK, following my own prompt, I found myself reading this very interesting

Are you serious? My guess is it would be worth quite a bit. Plenty collect
old mics.

OK, I'm only kidding - a 30s German mic (never mind the make) with 'Hands
off - private property. A.H.' (or somesuch) on it would be worth a bit of a
punt, would it not? (Better than Chinese 'Wehrmacht Leicas' at any rate! :-)

Right. It's as quiet as the pox doctor's waiting room in here and I'm in the
mood to entertain - so, here's what me 'unattenuated' Norrie looks like (see
other, recent thread):

http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/showntell/Clipping.jpg

Here's what the first track (including set-down) sounds like:

http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/showntell/NorrieClip.mp3

And, as a bonus, a similarly 'unattenuated' track of the incredible Marlene
recorded somewhere around 1929/30 I believe (mit som *sefeer klippink*,
unfortunately):

http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/shown...arleneClip.mp3

Incredible innit - wonder if it was a CMV3?

Feeling the need for some noise? Take a look at this bunch of lads
from back home in the Faroes with their modern take on a traditional
tune.
