Difficult to find an advert for an ss amp in a UK comic that doesn't use the
word 'valvelike' at some point, these days......

I wouldn't know, as I don't read the ads. Though I do know that I will
not be buying a SS amp from a company that claims it sounds 'valve like' ...

I can just imagine how well your Latin goes down, when speaking to the
blokes down at the local, or at the footy.

Oh you know those rugby chaps at the gentlemens club ... they are all
defined by the school they went to 30 years ago ... I'm sure they will
relish the chance to practice their Latin ...

;)

Local? Footy?

Anybody knoe that of which this poor fule doth speke...??

(Is he an antipodean chav or summat...??? ;-)

I see the winkly emoticon, but I'll bite anyway ...

'local' - the pub around the corner wheer you live or work
'footy' - in New South Wales or Queensland, it means rugby league
- in all other parts of Australia, it refers to the abomination
that is 'aerial ping pong' (aka Australian Rules Football)
- very rarely is the term 'footy' used to refer to 'association
football'

What, like scissors??

no, scissors do their job effectively for cutting certain things.
Is there a replacement? Not in this case.

Let me shift the goalposts a bit ... ;)

Are there any universities that still teach valve (or tube)
technology as a *core* part of an EE degree?

I don't think so, you point being ?

valves are outdated technology?

I don't think anyone will argue that valves are old technology, but does
that as such have any bearing on anything ?

that the function of valves as an amplifiing device is now obsolete as
it has been replaced by something cheaper and more efficient? (i.e. the
transistor)

Are you suggesting that new is always better ?

not all the time, but usually true in terms of technological advances.

Could it be possible that non-linearity and the built-in distortion
factor is what causes the difference in sound? That a perfect "wire with
gain" amplification is actually *wrong* for our ears simply because it
does *not* introduce the distortion that our hearing associates with
"real" sound?

Interesting point but I think perhaps a non-starter.

If listening to a live performance, for the sake of argument, from a
point source instrument, our 'inherent distortion' is the only thing
impacting on the signal.

If we now make a recording of the signal, again, for the sake of
argument, with a perfect microphone, and played it back from a single
speaker in place of the musician, with a perfect speaker, we should
expect the speaker to produce the same waveform as the musical instrument.

if the same waveform is produced, the ear will apply the same distortion
as before, and the perceived sound should be the same.

If we can agree on the above, this suggests that in order to hear
something that is true to the original sound, we need to have distortion
free reproduction.

IOW, the ear introduces the same distortion all the time, so introducing
more distortion wont help.

**I have news for you: "'normal'" ciggies are an highly efficient

oxygenated blood to the brain.

So? Your point being....???

Don't suppose you know who said that either, do you......???

**I know who said it, here in Australia. In Pommyland, no.

Pommyland? Aw, how twee....! ;-)

**As any Pom who visits Australia will attest, the term: 'Pommyland' quite
normal.

OK, so what famous Australian said it then?

**Ned Kelly, of course. Every Australian schoolkid knows that.

**Nope. There have been a few.

Ho hum....

(Jeez, ya hafta fekkin' larf.... :-))

**You don't get to use the words: "other than 'normal' ciggies" and claim
not to be a drug addict. You may as well have said: "Except for my daily
dose of heroin, I'm not a drug addict." The only significant differences
being:

* Heroin is less deadly.
* Heroin is illegal.
* Heroin is FAR easier to quit.

Why won't it help? Ever heard of noise cancellation technology?

Yes I have - but thats about cancelling *unwanted* noise.

the distortion applied by your ears is present even when you hear the
music *live*, first hand.

if you cancel it, you cant possibly hear something resembling the live
performance, as it, by definition, had the distortion.

Spoken like a bloke who uses a WP to leave a note for the milkman!

The point your are missing is that, for some of us, valves do a job better
than their so-called 'replacements'. I'm on a listening break from an amp
that was designed in 1929 using valves dating back to the time of Noah Zark
and it is *blissy*!!! :-)

(Feckin' gorgeous actually...!!! :-)
