Don't hold me to these figures but I believe the recent UK sales
have been along the following lines:

2001 - £178,000 (approx)

2005 - over a £million!

Low and behold Keith, on an Aussie TV news channel tonight I started
recording to hard drive just as the announcer was stating that 178,000
records were sold in the year in Aussie 5 years ago. Current sales were
said to exceed 1,000,000/year and demand is climbing. The new buyers
were said to be young people who are replacing their CD collection with
vinyl.

How many CDs per year are sold in Australia?

Jeez, does anybody care....???

They went on to say there is only one press operational in Australia to
meet demand.

Wonder how many CD production plants there are.

Jeez, does anybody care....???

On the telly, earlier this evening, Paul Gambaccini was reported as
having said he thought the 7" vinyl single could outlive the CD!!

Purely by co-incidence I just put up this page...

http://www.st-and.demon.co.uk/AudioM...ndLPsales.html

If you wish to comment on 7" sales, then you might also like to consider
those for 12" singles as well. :-)

Sure, why not - and tins of baked beans as well...??

I'm sorry, but seeing those figures/graphs based on BPI data has me reaching
for the salt cellar - elsewhere, I have seen nothing but reports of rapidly
falling CD sales and the manufacturing arm of the MI having to shed
shedloads of jobs as a result....?? (Or have I imagined all that - I'm sure
yer auld mate NK said summat to that effect..??)

Incidentally, the phrase "The right-hand plots is for albums, and the
left-hand plots for singles." is the wrong way round, according to the
graphs! ;-)

Naturally I am pleased to hear this because the sound quality from some
of these little buggers (at 45 rpm) can be very good indeed and I love
playing them myself! I have often said that a couple of kids playing a
stack of singles back in the 60s probably got more enjoyment from them
than some of the 'audiophiles' do today on the most expensive kit!

I heard a report about this on R4 last night. The report included a
comment
attributed to a BPI spokesman to the effect that, "They may be buying them
for 'fashion' reasons as many of the purchasers probably have no way to
play them."

Again BPI.....???

I've no doubt that 'cool' and faddishness will play a big part, but the fact
remains that at least one 16 year old made the comment about having
something *physical* to play...??

Agreed - I lived with an IFPI secretary for 7 years and got to hear about a
few of the 'goings on'....!!

I was also told recently that some organisation (??) is phoning companies to
see if they can 'unlicensed music' being *broadcast* in their workplace...??

Wonder where the average 16 year old finds something decent to play them
on? Of course they may like the sound of a Dansette too, but I don't think
this has much to do with a group dedicated to audio...

Of course not. If they are proper 45s, they are made out of the cheapest
re-cycled vinyl and mastered by the tea boy.

Can any of us say: "Dance Club"?

If I remember correctly they showed 7" singles by Arctic Monkeys and Keane.
Hardly what you'd call dance music.

What a load of rubbish! I like the way you can just pluck a figure from
the air and qualify it by saying not to hold you to it. Statistics say
whatever you want them to.
It also depends on whether that was one shop, one chain of shops, one
area, across the UK or world.

I saw this yesterday on the BBC 10 o'clock news. There were young kids
auditioning 7" singles on free to use turntables in some large record shop
somewhere and I believe the figures were for total UK sales of new 7"
singles.

What was interesting was the young lad on the TV prog said what he like
about the singles was the physical aspect of having something to see and
hold! (As opposed to the 'virtual music' of the iPods!) PG also said
summat like playing a record involved the visual sense and watching the
record play was an important part of the experience!!

Was he taking any drugs at the time as a "young lad" would not say that !

Well, this lad looked under 18 and was on national telly talking in a public
shop in broad daylight so I doubt if he was on drugs. In fact there were
both young lads and ladies talking about why they like vinyl.

Young people don't appreciate records as they have been brought up on CD
and MP3, so not many of them will have experience of records. They would
tend to class them as old peoples things - making them uncool to be
associated with.

But if they won't know any old people with vinyl the association will be
broken eventually. My brother (28) is indifferent to vinyl whereas my sister
wanted a turntable for her 21st birthday this year. Things go round in
circles and currently vinyl is becoming cool again.

Also, I think that part of it has to be that people are geting fed up of
loosing most of their music collection every time their iPod is stolen.
Who's going to mug someone for a 7"?

Phil

Depends on the particular disc. Some have been mastered by top flight
mastering engineers and pressed on premium virgin vinyl.

No, it's OK - the kid in the interview worked in a recording studio....

(Recording engineer/producer, I believe....)
