I'd be interested to know if anyone here has in recent years returned any
audio kit back to a UK maker for service/repair. And if so, how long the
process took, was the job done well, etc...

Asking because I've sent something back for service/adjustment/repair and
it seems to be taking longer than I'd expected. Back in ye olde days at
Armstrong we generally fixed/serviced sets sent back in no more than 48
hours!

This is something that audio mags generally don't cover as they just tend
to look at the items, not at reliability or service.

Slainte,

Jim

Probably didn't have to go back to China in those days...;-)

In my particular case the service people are in England. Mind you, from
where I live I guess that may class as 'abroad'... :-)

Yes, I know. I have an old Armstrong tuner, but its beyond repair, its
got the dreaded transister death common of Mullard types of the day.

Have you checked with either Mike Solomon or AHVS? They can usually repair
such items.

Used Quad service for the ESL's around 4 years ago, not cheap but very
well done tho!.

Seem to remember it was around 3 days to do..

They used to offer a 'while you wait' service. Went to the factory with a
mate to have his done - must be 30 odd years ago.

FWIW Armstrong also would do that if the repair/service could be diagnosed
to be something which could be done quickly enough. Or sometimes, "come
back after lunch".

By contrast I sent back an item for service/adjustement that got to the
makers at the start of last week. When I phoned yesterday (i.e. 8-9 days
later) I was told "No-one has looked at it yet" and "we generally take 2-3
weeks". That isn't exactly a disaster, but it does make me wonder why even
getting around to looking at the item should take so many days. Set me
wondering if this was now 'normal' and if so, why?

I sent my Meridian 206 back to them a year or so ago as I suspected a weak
laser. It was returned within two or three days, was told the laser was
still in-spec, no charge. I had previously sent back my Meridian 204 tuner
as the control panel stopped working. Again returned with a few days, and
with a perfectly sensible charge. I have no negative comments whatsoever
about Meridian's service.
