But if they won't know any old people with vinyl the association will be
broken eventually. My brother (28) is indifferent to vinyl whereas my
sister wanted a turntable for her 21st birthday this year. Things go round
in circles and currently vinyl is becoming cool again.

When was it ever *not*.....??

Depends on the particular disc. Some have been mastered by top flight
mastering engineers and pressed on premium virgin vinyl.

I was referring to 'proper' 45s. ;-) Modern ones will just be another
teenage fashion.

What was interesting was the young lad on the TV prog said what he

watching the record play was an important part of the experience!!

So nothing to do with the quality of the sound then?

Of course not. If they are proper 45s, they are made out of the cheapest
re-cycled vinyl and mastered by the tea boy.

And that's from the man who has never mastered a disc in his life.
So he should know:-)

Low and behold Keith, on an Aussie TV news channel tonight I started
recording to hard drive just as the announcer was stating that
178,000 records were sold in the year in Aussie 5 years ago. Current
sales were said to exceed 1,000,000/year and demand is climbing. The
new buyers were said to be young people who are replacing their CD
collection with vinyl.

How many CDs per year are sold in Australia?

Jeez, does anybody care....???

Yes. :-) It would be interesting to have the context for the above
reported figures. Indeed, if I had comparison figures I could perhaps
add them to the webpage.

They went on to say there is only one press operational in Australia
to meet demand.

Wonder how many CD production plants there are.

Jeez, does anybody care....???

Yes. cf above. :-)

If you don't care, why did you comment?

Indeed, if you don't believe any of these figures, why did you start
a thread and say you were pleased by hearing about a selection from
them on the TV?

Slainte,

Jim

Incidentally, the phrase "The right-hand plots is for albums, and the
left-hand plots for singles." is the wrong way round, according to the
graphs! ;-)

Oops! Typo, will correct. :-)

On the telly, earlier this evening, Paul Gambaccini was reported as
having said he thought the 7" vinyl single could outlive the CD!!

Purely by co-incidence I just put up this page...

http://www.st-and.demon.co.uk/AudioM...ndLPsales.html

If you wish to comment on 7" sales, then you might also like to
consider those for 12" singles as well. :-)

Is that music shipped or bought, and does it include independents?

ahem I draw your attention to the last couple of paragraphs on the above
webpage. :-)

From what I understand, the figures are for items sold, with 'returns'
subtracted. I also suspect that the meaning of 'DVD music' differs for the
BPI and RIAA figures. But I am simply presenting the figures 'as given'
since I have no way to assess how accurately the portray the actual market.
Thought that at least that way people could see them, and make of them what
they will.

What I found interesting was that the UK figures for 12" seemed to be
falling as those for 7" were rising, and that although magazines, etc, were
reporting the figures for 7" sales rising, no-one had mentioned the fall
for 12" sales. It gave me the impression that those who had been buying 12"
singles were changing to 7" for some reason,. But I have no other info
which relates to this, so I have no idea if the same people are involved,
or not.

Slainte,

Jim

So you considered pop single 45s in their heyday generally to be of the
highest quality, Iain?

And you are/were actually employed as a mastering engineer?

A good 12" 45 is probably the best vinyl sound you can get - transients are
*stunning* and bass is incredible on the right kit!

(But you already *know* that, don't you? ;-)

They were intended for use on Dansette players and juke boxes.

Yes. It was a part of the Decca training. I worked for two years
with senior cutting enginner Harry Fisher, under the auspices of
Cyril Windebank, chief engineer. I had my own cutting ID.
