Indeed not, but r.a.t is largely a mutual congratulation society of
the terminally bewildered, so one would reasonably expect a higher
standard of politeness. Afdter all, there's no real venom in debating
the relative merits of pentodes and triodes, now is there? :-)

After all, it is just a matter of personal taste, and a crusade to convert
the heathens
is pointless. It is an interesting fact that valve audio was all but
extinct in the late
70's, all of the 80's and most of the 90's. So a whole generation of
listeners (I
avoid the word audiophiles) had grown up not knowing or having heard a
valve
amp. Then, suddenly "glow in the dark" began to gain popularity, and is now
going from strength to strength. What does that tell us? High end valve
audio
contains a lot of iron, and is very expensive. I don't believe there is any
hype,
it is simply that many people think that valve amplifiers sound better.

This something that SP just cannot accept.

Oh no, I accept that some people prefer valve sound - I also know
*why* it sounds that way, which is because it does *not* sound like
the input signal. Those few top-class valve amp which *do* sound just
like the input signal, seem like an incredible waste of money!

He may like his Honda Civic. I prefer my Armstrong Siddeley:-))

How predictable. Of course, my Audi A6 3.0 Quattro does everything
better than an AS, except perhaps for that degree of 'presence' which
comes from owning something exotic and antique, even if of dire
performance by modern standards and needing constant maintenance.
Hmmm, I'm beginning to see a pattern here............

What a curious view you seem you have of the world, Stewart:-)
Why does debate have to be venomous?

My point was that there should be enough expertise on an NG
for people to help, ask questions and give advice, without risking flak
from your ubiquitous Spitfi-))

No one, but no one, knows everything there is to know about
the subject, and that's why intelligent discussion, as opposed to
flaming, is so important.

Sales of valve amps are increasing healthily, as more people
get to hear what they have been missing.

Your Quattro is a nice car. They use them for taxis in Stockholm.
My brother in law drives an S6. That's a VERY nice
car. But boring as hell. He borrows the Armstrong often.

In the words of Duke Ellington:
"Ya gotta have class:-)

Or perhaps in the case of an audio amp, "You gotta have glass" :-))

Tube Research Labs - there ain't no such thing..........

Really Mr Pinkerton know all. Any Serious valvies would know about the
King
of valves
Tube Research Labs:
Models

GTPR800 1600W $60,000.00
GTR800 1600W $45,000.00
GT400 Platinum Ed. 800W pentode
GT400
TR300

Again not Richer Sounds stuff - where obviously you do most of your
listening.

Since you've seen my page on Keith's site,

It's not *my* site - Nick Gorham's holding the ukra webpages now:

http://www.lurcher.org/ukra/

I'll just smile at that
one. Obviously, I'm not a 'serious valvie', and my point was that no
one has had such an exotic beast as a 'tube research lab' for about
fifty years. That would be rather akin to a buggy whip research lab.
It's called progress.........................

*Buggy whip* again?? That one's 'cropping' up a lot lately, ain't it?

(Pussy whipped, buggy whipped - these are all useful clues.....)

OK, that's enough - there's room for only *one* wag in this group and I'm

Sorry Keith:-)

I did na mean to step on your toes, Master of Wit and Repartee.
But SP has you all dancing. You looked as if you might need a bit
of support. This thread is pretty stormladen.

I know of several clever, well informed audio people who watch this group, but
do not take part for fear of the flaming they might receive. That's a great pity
because it deprives us all of their knowledge. What can be done?

Nothing, sadly. Any post of any substance is interrupted by the same
name-calling bigots. Like you, I post from time to time, and sometimes get fed
up and leave for months. It's always the same when you come back. As you know,
we post on a variety of other newsgroups and absolutely NOTHING like this ever
happens. In terms of bigots, I think this group takes the cake. Though, of
course, if you enjoy this kind of thing there's always the Balkan and Middle
Eastern newsgroups! I used to hang out on this group a while ago unil I ran
foul of Pinkies "Acoustically Transparent" stuff. At first I seriously asked
him what he meant, but the language I got back made me realise the whole thing
is just a wind-up.

Yes, you're right - time to hand over to some fresh blood! :-)

(I think you might have to have a chat with Andy to see who gets the 'Group
Wag and Bigot Basher' cap and badge though - he's off like a good 'un!! ;-)

I wonder why I always seem to take exception to what SP writes? I try not
to:-) I am sure that deep down he is a nice chap, and kind to him Mum.

But, one has to keep these things in perspective, and a touch of humour
goes a long way. I suppose that we recording professionals should be
grateful to Stewart
for teaching us all how it is done?

I'm pretty sure you haven't heard a 3 way active system with STA15, STA25 and

Decca ribbons, and two ATC12" subwoofers in 9cu ft cabs.

Ah, kool, a UK version of Dave Wilson's WAMM! Imagine how good it
could have sounded with proper SS amps! :-)

It was about as
awesone as it was space consuming. He got a girlfriend and it vanished within
days. Great things, girlfriends.

I think you mean grate, as in - women, grate, don't they?
