Cognitive dissonance?
"Don Pearce" wrote in message ... Have a listen to this, though. I've eq'd the Sax B sample to take out the Octava honk, and now it really isn't a million miles from the Neumann. What do you think? Not perfect because I only spent about thirty seconds, but close enough for a comparison. http://www.soundthoughts.co.uk/listen/SaxB_eq.wav Yes. Good. I did the same with the AKG C1000 (the mic which Arny claimed "sounds like ****") to imporve the 5-9kHz region. I used a Neumann 184 as a reference. But in Keith's sample the Neumann is so much cleaner than the Octava. You can't correct that with EQ. Iain |

Gibson SG, Fender Strat (both from the 1960s), and now the Martin. d Obviously it isn't played in yet, and it is all stiff as anything, but here's why I bought it. A little "Stairway" seemed right. http://www.soundthoughts.co.uk/listen/martin.wav The mic is a Rode NT1-A three feet away, pointed at the body end of the fingerboard. I'll post a pic later - my camera battery is down right now. Three feet? Sounds like 10cms! Good bold projection. How long will it take to play in? Ah well, a good mic, and I hung a winter weight goose down duvet a few feet behind it to minimize the room (my study is already pretty well damped). I reckon about a month for the guitar, and another couple for me. Just thinking, if this is a "sunny day" purchase, it's a good thing you don't live in Kap Verde :-)) I'd rather Norkapp, actually. I'm a winter person, but I do like sun - contradictory or what? d |

I tried a load that sounded dull as ditchwater, then the chap went into the back and brought out a Martin - *******. I'm now quite a bit poorer, but boy does it sound nice. Great, Don. To my ear, Martin is one of the holy trinity: "Guild, and Olson and holy Martin" Nice way to celebrate a sunny day:-) Iain I don't know the Olson sound, Verty distinctive, especially with alternative tunings. James Taylor plays Olson. Just tried the Martin in dropped D - oh my, that really sings. but I'll take your word for it, but as you say, for the rest Guild and Martin are up at the top. The choice of so many session players. I tried loads that begin with a T, Turner, Taylor, Takamine, Tanglewood and they were all in the same mould, a bit safe with nothing to frighten the horses. All good but a little bland? Very. Competent but dull. I now have another kind of holy trinity. Gibson SG, Fender Strat (both from the 1960s), and now the Martin. My holy trinity was for acoustics. There must be an ht for electric too? Strat has to be there right in themiddle. What might the other two be? Rickenbacker, Gibson? The Gibson for sure. Maybe one of the boutique electrics like a Pensa Sur for the other. Not enough people have one of those to make it a classic though. Mark Knopfler seems to do nice things with his. d |

I had an email conversation with Ty Ford, a mic guru on rap a few years ago about the NT1-A and the TLM103 (coincidentally). I reckoned they were close enough in sound that I could make them indistinguishable with only minor eq. We used voice rather than an instrument - a much tougher test to pass - but he agreed in the end, with my eq curve it was impossible to tell them apart. d |

There are of course lots of boutique acoustic makers, whose guitars seem to start at Euro 3k, But I don't really think its fair to include those in the general list. Is your Martin a D1? Iain |

Not surprising with floor to ceiling glass on two opposite walls! Just another attempt to spark of a bit of interest and liveliness in the group!! When you get to know the Neumann, you will appreciate its clean warm sound more and more The Oktava doesn't come near it. You made an excellent choice. Thanks - I'm pretty sure I have and am looking forward to 'discovering' it, but it's always interesting to me to hear the opinions of others! A thumbs up is nice to get but nevr an essential for me!! I already know what the press and 'Internet forums' say and I do not suffer with 'cognitive dissonance' myself - if I buy expensive crap, I *know* it's expensive crap!! (And usually unload it on eBay!! :-) |

The duvet wasn't fallen down when I did the recording, by the way. A bit of my Fender Jazz bass is just visible too, forgot about that one. d |
