New Armstrong history webpages by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I have just put up two new webpages on the history of Armstrong audio and
'related topics'. You can find them at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/Armstrong/reviews/FactoryCloses/1979-81.html
and
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/Armstrong/reviews/finale/1982.html
These took a lot longer for me to write than the previous pages and contain
a lot more. I decided to finally spell out in details a lot of...

KEF T15 by
Eiron[_3_]
While we're all praising/damning old KEF drivers, does anyone remember
the T15?
Any opinions? It's a large dome tweeter crossed over at 1kHz.

Beringer sound card on usb issue by
Brian-Gaff
Hi I have bought from amazons one of their sound adaptors with phonos on the
back in the hope of being able to use it for recording line level stuff, and
output line level stuff. Info is quite vague on the instruction leaflet, but
it suggests it has a cd with it, but none was sent as it seems to work when
you plug it in. Or should I say not work.
The output from the phone output sockets...

Decent phono cable. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Since I didn't really get a definitive answer I took a punt and bought a
reel of RS 7481958.
It's about the same diameter (3.1mm) as cheap audio co-ax and has a
conductive layer with drain cable, so nice and easy to fit connectors to.
And it does the job perfectly. No buzz at all.
Oh - a 100 metre reel cost less than many a single posh name phono cable.
;-)

French speakers by
Eiron[_3_]
Adverts for the Devialet Phantom keep popping up on my browser.
http://en.devialet.com
A revolution in sound reproduction or a flash in the pan like NXT?
Anyone heard one?
It looks like an undersized speaker with a high powered amp
and bass boost to give a flat response down to a claimed
16Hz(-2dB) at low levels, or 49Hz(-2dB) at high power levels.

Next Armstrong history page by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I've just put up the next 'history' page on Armstrong 'recollections and
reviews'. This is at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/Armstrong/reviews/changes/1975-8.html
To an extent this 'reviews the reviewing' of the time. The endgame of the
story will appear on another page covering 78 into the early 1980s. I
decided that trying to cover the entire period and discuss all the factors
*and* the changes...

Circuit diagram for Ortofon MCA-10? by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Can anyone point me at a copy of the Ortofon MCA-10 mc 'head amp' circuit
diagram?
I'm asking because I'm currently dissecting a magazine review of the
Armstrong 700 amps. The review contains a depressing number of confusions,
misleading comments, and slips. But I'd forgotten until today that the
'postscript' included a comment to the effect that the reviewer compared
the 700 mc preamp with the...

Hi Fi magazines - early 1970s by
News
Around 1970ish, four of us formed an informal club whereby we each
bought one magazine per month, which was subsequently circulated such
that we all read four magazines a month, for the price of one.
Two were Hi Fi News and Wireless World. Any suggestions as to the
titles of the other two?

Getting rid of mobile phone galloping ghost from audio circuits. by
Brian-Gaff
With the proliferisation of mobile devices running on the mobile phone
network its getting increasingly a annoying to listen to things on a good
old fashioned or even new fangled radio, without the noise occurring at some
point. Even from next door one can get it getting into the audio chain.
Anyone know if there is an easy way to stop it. In the old days a few
capacitors got rid of Radio...

Audio mags by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I'm currently writing about the 'Silicon Era' of Armstrong products - i.e.
covering the 600 and 700 units from 1973 on. As with the earlier 'Eras' I'm
basing this on reporting the content of reviews and adding comments and
recollections.
A problem is that in some cases I have a reprint of a review, but *not* an
actual copy of the magazine. In some cases I don't even know the issue or
have ever...

QUAD QCII versions by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I'm in the process of producing a small selection of 'demo' pages for the
Museum of Communications in Fife. I'm currently writing some brief texts to
accompany photos and other details of some items in their (vast!)
collection. Aim being to get them to proceed with a much bigger website
showing info on many of the objects they have. Sort of web museum.
I've hit a puzzle with a specific item and...

Intermittent Audio Fault by
RJH[_4_]
Not sure if anyone can give me any pointers to diagnose the following issue:
I recently bought a Tannoy BaseStation One TV soundbar. While watching a
film, the audio will cut out for maybe half a second every 20 minutes or
so. Possibly relevant detail:
The BaseStation is connected directly to the TV with an optical cable;
The cut in sound never happens in the same place twice;
It also happens...

Audio history by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I've recently been working though Wireless World issues from the 1930s and
1940s, looking for info on the ancient history of audio/hifi. As mentioned
in another posting, doing this at the Museum of Communications in Fife.
They have a fair collection of old mags, abeit with gaps and mainly on
'radio' and related topics.
It occurs to me to ask he
What other magazines from the 1930s-50s period...

Armstrong 626 nenewal! by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I've just been going though the process of having one of my old Armstrong
626 recievers serviced/modified by Mike Solomons of London Sound. I
actually sent him both the examples I owned and he then worked on the one
judged the 'best' for service and improvement.
I understand from the courier 'tracking' that it should arrive soon. All
being well, it is promised today. So I have the relevant...
