Weird. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Have a home made amp in the workshop which is used a great deal - I tend
to listen to the radio all the time I'm in there. And of course doubles as
a test amp for anything needed. My diagrams for it are dated 1997, and
it's worked just fine since I built it.
Until last Friday. Had to turn the volume well up to hear anything.
It has balanced inputs, and the unbalanced outputs appear beside...

Proms 4.0 test streams by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
People may be interested in this.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radio3/posts/BBC-Proms-in-Surround-Sound
I'd be interested in knowing what Linux distros/browsers work (or not).
Both for my own interest and to pass on to the BBC for their info. Hope is
to make the final 4.0 systems as accessible as possible as well as as high
quality as possible.
I'd also like to give it a try myself, but almost...

Balanced to unbalanced. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Have a quite old M-Audio DAC feeding TV sound via Toslink to the Hi-Fi,
which works ok. But the actual audio level is a bit low compared to the
radio tuner, CD, etc. The output level from the TV is fixed.
The DAC has both XLR balanced and 1/4" jack unbalanced outputs. Thought
this odd 'till I looked inside - it uses discrete transistors to drive
both, and both can be used at the same time....

high quality USB audio ADCs by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Just to let people know I've now put up results of my tests on two high
quality (and expensive!) USB ADCs. They are the Benchmark ADC1 and the
NuWave Phono Convertor. Both work fine with Linux and RISC OS. You can find
the page at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/HFN/ADC/HighQualityADCs.html
I ended up buying the ADC1 I was sent to test! :-)

Ground loop problem. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Been playing with an pro electronic crossover in conjunction with a Quad
405, and am having ground loop problems.
IIRC, a 405 used with a 33 etc pre-amp doesn't have the mains ground
connected - it gets its mains feed from the preamp via a two core main
lead. Perhaps not PC these days. The 405 input socket has the ground
connected to chassis. Have read the grounding arrangements internal to...

Call the council noise complaints by
Brian Gaff[_2_]
I don't know if e any of you caught this series, but i listened to a couple
where the council left, presumably calibrated recording equipment with
residents to try to find out if the noise they claimesd was ruining their
lives was against the law.
In both cases, it seems the actual recording did not show a very loud
sound. To me this would point to perhaps structure borne sound or some kind...

Painting tweeter faceplate by
RJH[_4_]
I have pair of these speakers (ATC SCM40):
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ATC-SCM-40-Black-Ash-Excellent-pair-/141312839532
Is painting the tweeter plate quite easy? The dome seems to be fixed to
the plate in some way, and I can't see how to get a neat finish (as in
this pair - the photo shows it well).
How is the bass unit fixed to the baffle? I'd guess 'from behind', but
if so, how does the...

Media PC (laptop), USB 5.1 versus SP-DIF by
Peter Chant[_3_]
I'm setting my laptop (linux w XBMC) as a media centre when it is not
out and about. It has not got 5.1. The docking station has a coax
SPDIF output so I am wondering which works best, cheap DAC with SPDIF
input v cheap DAC with USB? I'm leaning toward SPDIF, hopefully it is
either already transformer coupled or can be easily (I hope). I've had
issues with cable boxes / laptop power supplies...

Battery power a DAB radio by
RJH[_4_]
I've got an unused DAB radio (an Alba PD2) that I'd like to use in the
bathroom.
It's mains only - the mains input jack says '6V DC 1500ma'.
Might it be feasible to lash up a rechargeable battery pack of some sort
- lead or NiMH, for example? There's a fair bit of room in the large
case - I'd say at least 5cm x 5cm x 4cm.
I would just try a few NiMH but some radio manufacturers describe them

Note to self, do not use Servisol on headphone sockets by
Brian Gaff[_2_]
Yes, I had a crackly one on a mixer desk I use, and gave it a squirt and
worked the plug up and down in it and all seemed fine. Left plug in
overnight, In the morning there is no retention or connection, one supposes
some solvent in the spray has melted the material the contacts were mounted
on.
One lives and learns.

USB Audio ADCs by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I've now started writing up the results of measurements on three different
devices. FWIW The best of these is a Focusrite 2i2. I'll put results on the
web and in a magazine article when done.
However I'd still be interested in other alternative devices. Steinberg
claim that all their 'UR' series *except* the UR22 are USB audio class
compliant. Which is daft from my POV as the UR22 is the only...
