Ethernet cables matter now? by
RJH[_4_]
As if trying to sell people hugely expensive mains and audio cables
wasn't enough, it seems that computer cables are now fair game:
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/07/even-vegas-strangers-agree-340-audiophile-cables-make-no-difference/
(from comp.misc)
A vaguely interesting point is made in the test report however,
referring to cheap ethernet cable not meeting LAN spec. Quite what that...

More audio tomfoolery by

Not sure where to start with this. Audioquest:

On their web site, they do a 'Computer audio demystified' report:

Din speaker sockets / adaptors. by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I have loads of DIN speaker plugs with screw-terminal connections for the
leads. However I find these are a pest because the connections come loose
over the years. So I tend to prefer to use plugs I can solder the leads
onto.
I'm just getting one of my old Armstrong 626s refurbished/tweaked, so want
to make up four din speaker plug to binding post adaptors. But I only have
a couple of solderable...

Mac playback sample rate by
Arthur Quinn
Hello all,
I just bought a DAC Magic 100 to connect to my iMac. When connected via
USB it indicates a 96kHz sample rate at all times, whether playing or
not - including when playing 44.1kHz material. Presumably the Mac is
upconverting. Is there any way to stop this?

Silly question! by
Graeme Wall
Probably a silly question to bring up on this group but does anyone have
any opinions on the USB turntables John Lewis are selling?
The reason I ask is I've discovered a box full of 1960s singles that I'd
quite like to stick on my iThings and can't be fagged trying to marry
the hi-fi and computer together to do the job properly as it would
involve major rewiring sessions to get them into the...

Linn Majik by
Dave Plowman (News)
Picked up a broken Linn Majik amp the other day, and soon got it fixed.
It has extremely basic controls on the front - so obviously is intended to
have a remote control. Genuine Linn ones seem to fetch a fortune on Ebay.
Anyone know which generic ones will work?

DAB BBC dropout by
Gordon MacPherson
Hi,
Yesterday started to get complete dropouts every few minutes on BBC 3 and 4
DAB. Dropouts last a few seconds and sound then returns as normal. Happens
with 3 different radios in different places in the house. Does not happen
with Capital Radio. Does not happen with FM or internet.
We live in Dorset (BH20 5BB) and BBC say no faults with transmitters.
Suggestions?

Bluetooth hifi by
BobH
I'm not too sure which group this post should go, so I'm hoping I'll get
some answers here.
At the Moment I have a rather old ,15 years, Denon DRA-F101 and a
DCD-F101, and I would like to replace it with something more modern!
By that I mean something with either bluetooth or wireless, as I have a
pair of wireless, not bluetooth, speakers. These are used to play
streamed music from my NAS...

Speaker grille cloth. by
Dave Plowman (News)
More car audio than Hi-Fi, but any suppliers of speaker grill cloth other
than the usual suspects like Wilmslow and Falcon?
Ideally a plain light/mid grey material. Closest I could find is more of a
charcoal.
Needs to be the usual strong but slightly stretchy stuff.
Or is there a generic fabric that would be ok?

Flac and Audio CD Health Checks by

Audio CD Health Check by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I'm just finishing a program that does a simple 'Health Check' on the
quality of recordings on Audio CD. As an illustration of its use I've done
a page at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/HFN/HealthCheck/CD.html
to show some examples of the kinds of effects it will show.
The first version of the program I wrote will appear on my site in the next
day or two. That runs on RISC OS, but I'll also do a...

Brian-Gaff
Well, certainly the cheap vinyl turntables are as much rubbish as you say,
but you can still get good ones
However, I beg to differ on digital. a good cd is still good, and making any
kind of lossy copy of it is effectively making like a cassette version. The
effects to my ears of mp3 are a fast cycling of phase information, and aloss
of detail. Its amazing, though just what can be done to...

CD Player advice by
Vir Campestris
All uk.tech.broadcast denizens can stop reading now ;)
Our CD player has died. Suggestions please on how much to pay to get a
replacement. It was a Philips CD373, and to be honest it doesn't we us
anything - it's been around a good long while. I suspect the laser has
died, as it went from perfect to "I see no disc" in an instant.
I'm not into gold plated unidirectional silver mains cables,...

Audio Factory info by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Those who use the BBC Radio iPlayer may find a new page at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/BBC/AudioFactory/AudioFactory.html
of interest.
It is the result of recent discussions with some people at the BBC and
sheds some light on the current developments. Note that things are still
evolving and there are some outstanding areas that need clarification.
I'll update the page when things change or some...

What causes this effect. by
Brian Gaff[_2_]
I have noticed of late that some bbc I player talk only shows have a gritty
gurgle that almost sings along with the loudness of the speech. Its some
kind of digital effect, yet some files of the same compression type have it
while others do not.
Its as if the max level is going into clipping in a kind of very fast
cyclic fasion.
I did wonder if somewhere the content has been lossy...

Alphason Tonearm ... by
Arfa Daily
I've just had a Linn Sondek LP12 cross my bench for checking over. It is a
'lucky find' for its current owner, and he is going to be moving it on
shortly (as you would ! )
It's fitted with an Alphason Delta tonearm and a Blue Point (No 2 ?)
cartridge, which doesn't have a replaceable stylus. I say "No 2 ?" because
it 'looks' like one of those, but doesn't actually say that on it. Most...

Amplifier issues by
RJH[_4_]
My 20 year old Rose valve preamp has started making a 'whooshing' sound,
varies in intensity, with a steady rush of background hiss. Might it be
the valves? Everything lights up, and I've had the back off and all
looks in order.
For now, I'm using an older(er) NAD 3020 integrated amp in preamp mode.
It works fine, but sounds 'soft' by comparison with the Rose (when it
worked) - 'smooth'...
