Amplifier fault by
RJH[_4_]
My power amplifier has just stopped working. It's a Rose English made
70W stereo amplifier, about 20 years old. Here it is with the top off:
http://flic.kr/p/mbRV1M
When I switched it on there was a noticeable 'phutt', but no noise at
the speakers. Now nothing - no mechanical or electrical noise, and the
power LED doesn't come on. Also, when I disconnected the speaker cables,
one had...

I don't know if this will work with Chrome on Linux, though. At present I
use FireFox on fairly old distros and feed the output out via USB. Fear I'd
have to change a lot of that for it to work! Anyone using a system that
might work who can comment? FWIW I'm asking a couple of people at the...

Turntable power supply by
David B
Hello all,
I moved house the other day and somehow or other managed to loose/misplace
the power supply for my Pink Triangle PT1. I'm totally ignorant on all
things like this so what sort of power supply do I want?
They were designed to be run at 9V DC but my old supply was 12V.
It had a 3.5mm Jack plug.
That's all I know.

Unbalanced from balanced. by
Dave Plowman (News)
On the odd occasion when I've been forced to feed an electronically
balanced output into an unbalanced input, I've normally done this by going
across Pin 1 (ground), and Pin 2 (+) But I've just come across an
electronically balanced device that seems to also short 1&3. Thought that
was bad practice or is it ok these days?
Other odd thing is the spec of this balanced output - it says...

Graphic equaliser. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Being rather out of touch with the latest gizmos, any recommendations for
a decent sounding graphic equaliser that won't break the bank? 1/3rd
octave type would be ideal.

Mains input wiring. by
Dave Plowman (News)
I have a bit of a block when it comes to mains transformer wirings. ;-)
Device is factory set to 120v AC 60Hz, it says on the gubbins.
It has an analogue PS with a mains transformer.
It has two primary windings wired in parallel. Red and black go to neutral
on the IEC connector, brown and orange to the on/off switch output.
Obviously, they go to series for 240v - I assume the transformer...

USB Audio ADCs by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Just to report some progress with this.
I'm testing a Behringer UMC202 and a Focusrite 2i2 ( both stereo ADC and
DAC, up to 96k/24). They both work OK with Linux and RISC OS. Been making
test recordings using them. Quite impressed with the 2i2 in particular.
Fingers crossed I may also have a chance to try something else as well. But
the combination of the 2i2 and a Linux laptop look like a neat...

Behringer ADCs, etc by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I'm experimenting with a Behringer UCA202 ADC+DAC but I'm also interested
in some of their better models like the UMC202 which can provide 96k/24.
(Plus also perhaps alternative makes.)
Anyone had any experience of these for playing or recording via USB? And
any particular suggestions for a *UK* dealer I might buy from who will deal
via email/letter/etc rather than being an anonymous website...

Roksan Xerxes Plinth Replacement by
RJH[_4_]
I have an old 'sagging' Xerxes and what looks to be a non-manufacturer
MDF plinth - in the sense that Roksan don't seem to sell them and it has
no markings, so I'm assuming it's a 3rd party affair.
Has anyone tried to replace these plinths, and can offer advice? The
Roksan forum seems to concentrate on weird fettling and Roksan's own mods.

Speaker level adjustment by
Chris J Dixon
My amplifier has two outputs. One is switched, and used for the
speakers in the living room. The other is taken via a separate
switch box to speakers in the dining room and kitchen.
Originally, the relative sound levels in all three rooms were
reasonably matched. However, during a kitchen refit, I had to
get rid of the conventional speakers, and fitted a pair of small
KEF in-ceiling units....

Soundstage and hearing loss by
TonyL
Another thread mentioned the importance of treble frequencies in forming a
soundstage. I'm losing some HF hearing, about average for my age. Long
before I became aware of this I had noticed a lack of spatial definition in
the systems I use and posted a query here a while back. Now I know I have a
fairly steep HF cut off starting around 8.5 kHz.
System A uses Behringer B2031A monitors fed...

Linn turntable hinges by

Why are they so crappy?
http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=22598&d=1171259648
Anyone know how long replacements last?
Is there an improved design that actually works?
Or does everyone fix theirs with metal pins and epoxy?

Speaker height above floor. by
Dave Plowman (News)
As most will know, speakers like the Spendor BC1 sound horrid if placed on
the floor. Raising them on a stand with air between the floor and the
speaker sorts out the bass end nicely.
In practice, the stand height places the tweeter roughly on line to the
ear when sitting down.
But is there a formula for the ideal distance from floor to speaker based
on cabinet volume or whatever? Or is it...

Technics SL 5 regreasing? by
Brian Gaff
I have Ive== one of these in working order, and use it as being blind its
far easier to get the pick up on the actual record!
However in recent years its sticking both at the start, ie motor does not
push it quit far enough to go off and at the end, ie does not always pick
the pick up of. On having a feel I notice the original grease on the
tracking system is going slightly sticky. What I...

Cambridge Audio P140X. by
Trevor Wilson
I just found the above-mentioned amp in my store room. It actually looks
like quite a nice old thing. A new (Alps) volume pot and it runs a
treat. Fairly primitive output devices (MJ802/MJ4502), but, given the
age, it's a reasonable choice. Does anyone have any information on this amp?

USB input devices - audio and microscope by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I'd be interest in recommendations/comments on suitable USB audio devices
for two purposes.
1) High resolution stereo audio sampling ADC. Ideally up to 192k/24bit.
2) Microscope. Mainly for things like examining a LP replay stylus.
I want these to work without problems (or an install struggle) with Linux
distros. But in the case of the stereo audio ADC I have an additional aim.

Rotel RA-840BX4 by
Woody[_4_]
Found one of these scrapped at the tip the other day but
otherwise in nearly new condition.
It works OK - yes the selector switches are a bit noisy but
Electrolube will fix that - but there is a low level buzz
present even with the volume fully down and which rises in
level with the volume, most noticable on the phono input.
The cct diag shows the low level circuits to be run off
their own...

I was amused to hear on today's BBC R4 'Moneybox' programme about

I wonder if he remembered to plug them in and switch them on!

Silent muting. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Bit of a play on words. I used relays between the analogue crossover and
the power amps on my modified LS5/8 to prevent that annoying squeak at
power up. They simply short the amp inputs for a second after power op.
They do prevent the 'squeak', but replace it with a gentle plop. Any easy
way to make this totally silent?
