Testing a tweeter. by Dave Plowman (News)
Any tips on testing a tweeter other than substitution? For example, with a bass unit you can get at least some idea of its condition by examining the cone and surround for damage and by moving the coil to check if it's rubbing. Any similar basic tests for a tweeter? -- *If only you'd use your powers for good instead of evil. Dave Plowman London SW ...

5.1 into 2 goes if you shove hard enough. :-) by Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Is there a 'standard' mixing set of values for converting 5.1 surround into stereo? I've started doing some experimental recordings of 'HDTV' and recorded last night's broadcast of the 'broadway' prom on BBC HD. This has 5.1 surround. I can extract this as '6 channel LPCM', but then am not sure what balance of mixdown the BBC and commercial TV set makers, etc, assume you'd apply to convert to...

BC 109 improvement? by Dave Plowman (News)
Have a circuit from the '70s I wish to try and it uses BC 109/179 complimentary pairs. Is there a better choice these days that is a direct substitute? -- *If at first you don't succeed, redefine success. Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound.

Help with JVC JA-S11 amp please by cave_johnson
Hello everyone I need some help with a JVC JA-S11 amp I got from my father if anyone knows more about them. He had it in storage for a while but gave it to me as a housewarming present. It mostly works fine but there's one problem: Usually on this amp after you turn it on you'll hear a click after a few seconds and then the amp starts working. When I turn it on the light comes on but no click....

Balance ICs by Dave Plowman (News)
Used to use the SSM2142/43 ICs as cheap and cheerful balance drivers/receivers. But these seem obsolete. Any modern equivalent? -- *The statement above is false Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound.

Bush House equipment sale. by Dave Plowman (News)
I've been following this with some interest, and the more 'desirable' items like speakers and mics seem to be selling for more than you'd get on Ebay. Weird. -- *I don't work here. I'm a consultant Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound.

BBC World Service clearance sale by Rob[_8_]

I'd imagine they're well used though, and it really is pot luck as it's unlikely I could check before the auction.

HDCD by Jim Lesurf[_2_]
This is a long shot, but it seems worth asking... Anyone know the *details* of HDCD flagging/encoding and/or know how to contact 'cjk32' (C. J. Key, I think) who at Cambridge produced the hdcd.exe for Windows users? I'd love to do an analysis of this, but that means being able to understand the system and be able to decode discs using my own software so I know what it happening. There is a USA...

Clock radio replacement speaker by Rob[_8_]
Is there such a thing as - or point to - a quality speaker in a humble clock radio? I've got an old Hitachi model and the speaker (3" di., 1" depth, Bell .5W 8 Ohms) looks to have perished. It still sounds OK, and I only use it in the workshop. But still. Thanks, Rob

Myst amp. by Dave Plowman (News)
Must be the season for obscure amps, but I've just got one of these in with a dead channel. It's the early one - separates. Information (I've found) on these is limited to sales and owner bumf - can't find a circuit anywhere. Did find an article about replacing the original 2SJ82/2SK226 with 2SJ161/2SK1057, though. There are two tweaks - output voltage offset and standing current. Any guesses...

Backing Up My CDs by Java Jive
Having last year successfully backed up my vinyls, I now want to do the same with my CDs, of which a have something over 200. Not only will they then be backed up against, loss, theft, or damage, but also could be played directly by a media player. I plan to back up to *.WAV files, and scan the cover artwork. Currently I'm using WinDAC32 for the ripping. It rips the tracks fine and is...

Distorting speaker by Dave Plowman (News)
Been trying to sort a pair of Celestion Ditton 15, one of which is distorting. It's a sort of squawk excited by certain types of material - mainly female vocals. Covering the tweeter removes it - as well as the HF of course. The tweeter is an HF1300, so had it apart and examined the coil for signs of damage - but it looks ok (I have a new spare diaphragm assembly for my BC1 to compare it with)....

Eurovision sound ?? by Phil Allison[_2_]
Hi all, performers on Eurovision are supposed to sing live - but mostly use backing tracks for the music. So each has to supply their track to the organisers well in advance so it can be complied along with the rest ready for use and final broadcast. Listening on headphones ( via a DTV STB and normal amplifier ) the singing sounds live and is generally quite clean.
